Having found my fuel filter on my 1998 petrol estate, I had car up on ramps and all looked good. Plastic spring clips moved freely on both sides at each end and the filter also turned so all seemed good. I tried one end and managed to push both clips in the got them to stay latched in but no matter how much pulling and twisting I did I could not get the connector to separate from the filter. After two hours of trying ive just put some WD40 on them to see if that will help but can anyone else give me advice on this or even if possible pop up and give me a hand sometime before weather gets worse please.

Try and carefully remove the filter from it's mount to give you more room to work, you need to push in the tabs on the clips and keep them pressed in, I don't think they stay locked in by them selves.
Also push the connectors home before you pull them off...
Be prepared for fuel loss... if you break the connectors you may not be able to plumb in the new filter to stem fuel leaks...

Your not alone with this problem!! :(
I dread changing the fuel filters on my Omega's and I have major problems disconnecting those plastic clips even with the correct tool (which I always end up bending).
Sometimes a connection will come apart easily but often I end up mangling one before it gives way. I am also concerned that the plastic connector on the end of each fuel line will snap and give me even more grief!!
I hate plastic fixings!! They are the work of the devil. :o

Pretty easy on saloon, estate more fiddly due to location
Proper tools help, but not essential

At risk of pointing out the b obvious, part of each plastic clip stays attached to the filter and only part of it comes off. The two wedge shaped tabs that you squeeze together don't move - they stay on the filter. The ring shaped part that is closest to the body of the filter has to slide over the tabs to come off.

Correct tools on order now, I will see (weather permitting) how I get on next weekend. Think part of my problem is previous owner of the car didnt get this filter replaced when he should as it looks very old and starting to corrode which could answer some of my running issues!
