Title: Slipping clutch? I dont think so!

Hi, I have a V6 Omega Estate that has run perfectly for over a year...I have towed with it and driven hard at times....however today,without warning, the revs increased and the speed didnt whilst i was driving (may have been after changing into top but i am not certain)  I changed gear a few times and still the same. Then I stopped the car and set off again and all was well until it happened again , where changint gear /using clutch seemed to cure it. When it works ok the car drives perfect and pulls away from standstill fine...no usual symptoms of a slipping clutch. The pedal bites about 1/2 way and all controls feel "normal" to me with or without the fault... help and ideas please.

Sympoms described to resemble slipping clutch.

It's really not too bad a job. See my guide in the maintenance section :y

I would be checking fluid level and bleeding the clutch as it might be a very rare slave or master cylinder issue.

Not sure how bleeding it would help as its not a problem operating the clutch which air in the system would affect, rather it would appear something like the pressure plate is not putting full pressure on the drive plate or something similar...the revs increase and car speed remains constant without my foot on the clutch when it happens....then next it will all work perfectly.

that would happen with rust/dust or rubbish etc on the first motion shaft not allowing the clutch to fully move, you dont mention the mileage, but you do say you have driven it hard, so either the pressure plate has lost its bite or the diven plate is worn or the first motion shaft is sticky for whatever reason, it may feel normal at the pedal but i bet no matter what you say or do the box has to come down to do a visual inspection, ergo prepare for the worst and get a clutch kit in stock, (ask if you can return it if unused)ready to replace it, rather than whipping box off and being stuck!

Omegatoy you may be right ...it does make sense. I havnt driven it hard generally,just saying it has always been ok even when accelerating very hard or towing, never slipped before today. However it does seem to occur mainly/only after i have just used the clutch so i was already thinking maybe the pressure plate was being "held back" by a none fully returning cylinder piston or the likes....sticking on the gearbox shaft is a possibility also as you say.

Problem found I hope!  Took the gearbox off today and removed the clutch....the pressure plate is fastened to the clutch cover by 3 rivetted on spring steel strips....all 3 of these have broken off, leaving the pressure plate loose inside the clutch cover...is this a known fault?

Nope, the Omega clutch is pretty trouble free.

WHo said anything about air, I was thinking more the potential for fluid contamination of the friction material
