Title: Custom Exhausts
Post by: Simon72 on 21 November 2011, 19:18:00
I know before you all say it WHY have one done for a 2.2dti Estate :-(

I am trying to see if any of the OOF comunity has had one made before for their Diesels

If so what did you go for a Full cat back or just a rear.

My tail-box fell off over the weekend and I am contimplating having a custom one made
a) for the looks
b) to make it slightly growl a little.

What is the concensus of this, will it look better with a single 3" or twin 2.5" at the rear??

Also will there be any performance gains if a full cat-back is put on (BHP wise)
After this I will be going for a Full re-map to get the BHP / TORQUE increase.

Opinions welcome.

Recently put an Eternal exhaust on Mrs VXL V6's DTi estate. Fitted perfectly.

Alright si. Id give kingswinFord tyres a call. For a custom backbox with your choice of tailpipe its only 130 squids. For a cat back one its £235 ish. They use powerflow. Had mine done there and have used them for the last 7 years :y

To be honest I wasn't impressed with the Stainless Steel exhuast I had on my V6, If my DTi needed a new exhuast and I wanted the tail to be stainless I would just buy a standard Eternal item and add a Chrome / Stainless tail pipe from Poundland / Halfords.

Well went down today to MIJ Performance exhausts, have had the stainless rearend from the mid-box custom made, decided not to go to intrusive and spoil the look of the rear of the car.

Went for a nice twin Stainless 2.5" exit and they left off the backbox, there has been NO increase in sound levels at all but it is a nice cosmetic look now.

Going to go back beginning/mid next year and have the rest changed to a full stainless with Sports (Mid-sound) middle box.
Then followed by a remap to 160bhp ;-)

What sort of money they sting for a full front to back system if you don't mind my asking?

Something I wanted to have a play with on my old td's but never got round to.. I'd cut out the middle silencer and was going to decat, but had often wondered how much a 'proper' system would have cost.

A full cat-back system including Mid and Rear Sports silencers in stainless would have come in at £285.00 inc Vat

Mine at present cost £105 just for the rear stainless straight through from mid-silencer to the twin outlet.

I have then been quoted £165 to complete the job for the rest of the cat-back part with just a small sports silencer in the middle in stainless.

So the option I have gone for is far cheaper to do by leaving off the rear sports box. :-)

Yes you should give them a call and get a quote, excellent work and extremely friendly.

It's well worth a day trip up to them just to get excellent service, there was a guy there yesterday from south Wales having his BMW 335d twin turbo fully fitted with a cat back system.

I'd be interested to hear any V6 owners who might have been there, zorst on my 3.2 is not long of this world.

I want it to be as silent as possible really, with just a bit of a growl 4k rpm+

Steve (SP32) had one built by them on his 3.2, the car was bought by a member on here and is currently on ebay if you want to see pictures.

Only thing I would say is, if you go to any of these custom exhaust centres with a V6 insist that you have a twin pipe system all the way through, they will try and sell you a single pipe and get round any issues you may raise by saying that they will put a bigger pipe after the join. Anyone who has driven a V6 with the proper spec exhaust and a single 'mid' pipe exhaust will tell you how flat they are compared.

They will make it what ever spec you desire, twin centre or single centre with a 'Y' joint.

But if you chat to them on the phone speak to Andrew the Boss and explain exactly what you desire and what sort of sound you want.

Mention I was there yesterday and I have recommended you, I am trying to get them to sponsor me for The Rally For Heroes 2012 European Tour. ;-) lol

Also explain what sort of rear outlet you need, Single, Double, Single each side or Double each Side, this will reflect on price.

They are open 7 days a week as well ;-)

The exit you had looked fine, I'd like as close to standard look as possible.

Thing is I don't think stainless can ever be as quiet as "normal" exhausts can they? On petrols anyway  :-\

Sounds like you did alright there  :y
With exhausts being often a personal choice, it's nice to know there are some companies who still respect that and are willing to listen to the buyer. With your recommendations they could find a queue forming  ;D

strange one that as going into one pipe should increase torque and bring it lower into the rev range which if anything should improve drivability. When i had my previous m3 system built by custom chrome racing it went into one just after the cats, all the way back, the guy who brought the car off me said it was the best driving most torquey m3 3.0 he had ever driven and it actually was quicker than alot of the 3.2 models that he had driven, this was also confirmed by rolling road before and afters 285bhp before 318bhp after, with a similar torque increase, exhausts done properly with the right calculations work very well imho :)
