Title: Rear arches
Post by: GEZ110 on 22 November 2011, 18:43:53
Hi

The rear arches are starting to go on my 2000 MV6 estate. I'm planning on keeping the car long term so would like to sort out any rust issues before they take hold. Are replacement arch repair panels available? Has any one had this work done recently? rust is bubbling through the black strip in the door apperture and the arch upper lip has burst the paint but is not yet visable on the outer panel

I'd appreciate any advice you can offer

Cheers

Steve

Same issue here too my friend... spoils the look of the car doesn't it? very common fault on these cars.... I did post a similar comment on here about replacement arch panels but response was no one has heard of them so bodyshop and re-build of arch is required...

The rears on my Elite were bubbling on the inside slightly, but hadn't affected the outside face. As a preventative measure i cleaned it up, took the bubbled paint off back to metal, sanded the rust out, put ku-rust on it, hand painted it with black hammerite (a few coats), then put some underseal on. Everytime I wash the car I clear the inside lip of crud (quite alot can build up there and retain moisture.

This is not ideal but better than before and should hopefully keep the rust at bay for loger than if I had left it, and as it was the underside, the finish didn't really matter.

hi ya,

i have same prob that i'm still trying to fix. i've made a mess of it really and i'm tking it to the body shop ( :D) when i got some dough.

if you're talking about the rear arches my understanding is that to ''replace'' would be a welding job so presumably as thats expensive a repair would be more economical.

ps geoff, did you get brushmarks painting by hand?? if not how did you avoid? how did you manage an even layer?

cheers  :y :y :y

I don't know if i got brush marks or not I haven't looked close enough. I would've thought so though. Doesn't matter though it's got underseal on the top. It was bubbling slightly on the underside so thought I'd catch it early. The finish doesn't matter to me as it's on the underside and not the face so you can't see it. I did it to the elite, which is nocturno blue, so it's dark anyway.

I only thought of doing it after I got the MV6 which had been professionally done before i got it, to a very high standard.

This was a common fault on Scorpio (frog eye) I had a quote ranging from £250-900 one I settled on was 450, cut the rust out and fit a granada rear arch weld it blend it paint it and looked good then Stagecoach hit with a double decker, hence the Omega now :D I think it pays to shop around.

Looks really good, who did the work? did they cut out the rust or treat and fill? If your passing Barnton (CW8) I'd really appreciate a look, kettle will be on

Cheers
