I was driving and suddenly my car 2.2 petrol lost full power and would only idle....I switched off the engine and restarted it but it was still the same...when I selected 'drive' the warning sign read 'automatic gearbox'....I was able to 'limp' the car home in 1st gear..........any ideas as to what the problem is
Thanks

Probably either pedal sensor or throttle assembly. Needs the codes read to be honest

Went out and started the car today and it reved and drove with no problem..and NO warning of Automatic Gearbox....but it has now left me that I can't trust the car to drive any long distances 'til I get this sorted

has it been raining? gone through any water?
-
still needs codes read so you can investigate the problem

No rain...no damp...I'll try and get codes tomorrow

Got car on diagnostic this morning and showed fault with the throttle/pedal housing...I asked what the code was but the guy had cleared the faults and couldn't remember the code......he told me that if it happens again, to switch off, wait about 20-30 minutes and the fault would reset....is this true?.

No.
Indeed.. This type of problem will be detected at startup and immediately put the engine into limp-home, and the ECU stores faults even when switched off. ::)
And not bothering to note down the codes means that potentially useful diagnostic information has been binned. >:(

Don't know if there is anyone with a code reader in N.I.
We can't help much until we know the codes, sorry.
