Title: oil changed, now tappets seem louder
Post by: GEZ110 on 28 November 2011, 22:17:14
Hi,

I changed the oil and filter at the weekend, no my tappets seem louder! Any ideas?

I used genuine GM oil (10/40) and filter. I also pulled of the sump pan and cleaned out the oil pickup (not much other than a couple of 'o' rings!). I used the correct grey sealant when I re-fitted the sump.

Cheers

Steve

Hmmm, not uncommon to find o rings in the head oil ways....?

Oil is back up to level i take it? ... stick a pot of wynns lifter treatment in?

Put some forte engine flush in

then give it a good blast up the motorway

this will clean any crap out of the hyd lifters

Not really advisable, unless last resort.

I'd start by some quick 500 mile changes first.

"Giving it a blast" with flush in is certainly not advisable as it will break down the oil and reduce its' lubricating properties.

I would give it a while and see if they quieten down. It could be that air has been introduced to them during the oil change and it can take a while for them to refill.

If that fails, a dose of lifter treatment.

No mate. Not good advise. I hope you mean, flush at no more than tickover, replace with correct oil, THEN give it a blast....?

Serious damage may result from loading the engine wirh flush treatment in it.

Thanks for the replys. The oil level is back up at normal and hasn't fallen since the change.

I used white spirit to clean of the remains of the old sealant on the sump. I allowed the metal to dry before applying the new sealant and re-fitting the sump. Could this have caused the oil to thin?

I doubt it .

As Kevin said, just run the car as normal for a week or so.
If you get the chance, take it for a nice steady long drive and get the new oil / engine nice and hot  :y
You should find that the lifters have filled up with air as you have drained off the old oil.

Keep a eye on the oil level and report back on here in a few weeks or if you get a rattle from anywhere else to tell us how its running  :y

Similar story with me- I used oil flush yesterday and some Fresh 10/40 & filter. On returning home I noticed tappet noise. My plan was to simply use the car as normal and see how it progresses.

One thing I have witnessed to help freshly noisy tappets is to get home from wherever you've been in the car, leave it running, and go and have a cup of tea and don't switch it off til you've had a good sit down! A good long idle for half hour  :y
