The EML is off on the Zafira 1.6 (52 plate) but sometimes when accelerating the EML flashes, a steady on off, not flickering. What does it mean??
When I stop accelerating it goes back off and stays off (although on occasion it stays on but still flashes when accelerating)
-
when accelerating the EML flashes
any juddering or misfire ?
get the codes read
wouldnt be surprised to find its coilpack
also there was a fault which caused this but in early cars 2000 ? which was an earth wire between airflow sensor and ecu the remedy was to install another cable :y
but as said if juddering under acceleration and eml flashes more than likely coilpack :y
-
Major misfiring as cylinder 1 is not firing...not the coil pack though as that's been replaced...majorly suspect clogged up rings causing the zero compression on cylinder 1...plenty of engine and fuel cleaner being applied which does seem to be making improvements but still some flash under heavier load...just thought the EML was either on...or off...never seen one flash before

I did notice that when starting the car the fuel guage seems to flicker ad drop and thought about a possible earth issue so may well check this plus the degree of misfire varies...slight when cold then becomes more severe as car warms up

Flashing EML on an Omega indicates a fault that is liable to damage the cat. Maybe the same on a Zafira. A serious misfire would certainly be liable to damage the cat.
Have you read the codes?
-
also flashing eml light can be caused by rough running (misfire) causing low oil pressure which in turn causes tappets/lifters to rattle which is picked up by knock sensor causing flashing eml
another reason is as kevin has said ^^^^^^
there seems to be a number of reasons :-\
-
Have read the codes, initially they just said misfire cyl 3...
Last time I read them it included a list that had a stuck valve (cant remember which one) and something about the knock sensor...its using oil as the rings are stuck and so leaking oil (at least thats my theory atm) so having to top up regularly...not noticed if this stops the flashing or not
Just removed the plugs and cyl 1 plug is now very black...a good sign I think as presumably its now got some compression after cleaning...and it is running better...and the EML light has gone off
-
Black plug not a great sign!
Is it wet and black (oily) or dry and black?
-
If it does turn out to be a ring - I'm almost certain I have a set of rings for the 1.6 small block engine here. Genuine GM ones, at that.
It can't hurt, to have a go at re-ringing it? Nothing to loose if it's shafted anyway.
If it's the Z16XE you might be in luck...
-
Its dry black, but then its had tonnes of engine cleaner in it recently, what does dry black mean?...Z16XE indeed...engine running seems to be improving regularly...just meant it was good news in the respect that it wasnt firing at all before and the plug was still as new looking as the day I put it in...
Just checked the codes again and the non present codes are P300 Misfire at low fuel level and P303 misfire cyl 3...odd as it was cyl 1 that had no compression...
-
Dry black is a better sign. Hints that there is some combustion and hence compression.
-
Very good really as there was none before
-
Are you sure of that? Have you compression tested it? Do you have before and after readings?
-
Compression test done before, no compression...not paying for another lol
Plug was new looking before after quite a while of running...since cleansing the EML has gone off, the engine is misfiring less and running better and the plugs now black...in fact it was more carbonated than the others...

Get yourself a gunson compression tester for £20, use it as many times as you like, then it's yours for life? :-\
-
Will do :y Hi or Low guage?
-
Pretty sure there is some compression now where there wasn't before, most of the engine's power is back most of the time...occasionally (especially when accelerating the weight in 1st gear) on the short journey last night lost compression then felt the jolt of power as it cut back in...
Feeling pretty confident its just a matter of giving the engine a seriously good clean out...cleaner in the plug wells and letting it soak in, cleaner in the fuel and fresh oil and filter now that the cleaner in the oil will have had a good clean out :) Any other suggestions??
