Title: puzzle help requested
Post by: hotel21 on 16 March 2008, 20:22:43
The following piccy is a puzzle that should generate a set of northings and eastings coords for a puzzle I have stumbled across.  Despite resurrecting schoolboy physics, I got somewhere thats in the vicinity of Crathes Castle on Deeside and is not correct.

Could some clever peeps who are more experienced in such things perhaps give me a wee assist and work out whats the correct solution?  Am guessing that it should be somewhere within The Kingdom.

I think I got it wrong in the series/parrallel sums bit as opposed to the actual values.....

Assuming your using the numbers similar to below?

I know that it is the colour banding upon resistors to show their value but, as said, I made an error in the sums......

Am thinking someone who deals daily with such things may be better positioned to assist.....   ;)   :y

Good stuff that...........I think i will stick to building coolant emulsion oil systems with friction and lubrication boundaries

Quick cal gives:

E:549

N:299

Not checked it though....

should generate something in the format N 56'28.181" W2'59.341"

Lol.....being an engineer, I ditched the decimel points as non real values!

I was only ever taught a very non PC way of remembering the colour codes!  :-X  ;)

I get N 56  21 396 77 which sums to 550
        W  3  13 200 83 which sums to 299
Mean anything to you?

N - 550

W - 299

Or

N - 56 - 21 - 396 - 77

W - 3 - 13 - 200 - 83

Gents, that sounds like a concensus and places the end location near the Fife end of the Tay Road bridge.  Thanks for that!!  Will let you know how I get on.....   :y

Its been a long time since I saw resistor colour codes, modern resistors you can hardly see and they are so small they have no markings....

Now, if it was me, I would have laid it out as capacitors just to confuse the majority!

correct....   :y

Its a good way to get me out and about rather than vegetating and getting progressively hacked off with odd jobs in the house, daytime TV, fixing cars and keeps me plain and simple staying active, physically and mentally....  Sometimes need a wee assist with some of the puzzle ones, though, such as this one.  Worked out the concept, just got the sums way off....   ;)

1/R= 1/R1+1/R2
just use the 1/x button on your calculator, add em up then 1/x again for the result.
I knew those years at college weren't totally wasted. ;D

Its easier than that for calculator (spreadsheet use) on parralel pairs:

Rp = (R1 x R2)/(R1 + R2)

I fully agree with the forementioned. ;) ;) ;)
Going to find a thread I can understand. :D
