ok, so further to my what to go for post, im pretty sure im going for the saab. question is, its 80miles away and has no tax. where do i stand legally if the police do pull me on the way home?
my current car is obviously taxed and mot'd,and the saab will be sitting on the drive until i sell the bmw...i cant insure 2 cars and tax 2 cars, nor can i afford to trailer it home, so what would happen? if i could prove that i had just bought the car and was heading home would they be sympathetic?

Nope ... you would at best get a ticket, at worst the car could be impounded and scrapped.
A vehicle on the road MUST be taxed and Insured ... why do you think "trade plates" exist ?? It is to allow the "trade" to do what you are contemplating .. but legally.
Sorry, but that is the law .. :( and most police now would NOT be sympathetic in any way
-
Road tax. You have either paid for it on that car or paid for it on those (trade) plates. That is, if the car is sitting four square on a road repairable at public expense......
:)

cant the seller tax it ?? :y
at your expense of course worth asking ;) :y

It wouldn't cost any less... and it'd still need insurance.
-
If it is currently untaxed then you have a near 100% chance of being pulled over and you are most likely going to get the car impounded. Plus a hefty fine. It would be cheaper to just tax the car. At least then you are not throwing money down the drain.
-
80 miles is too far to just chance it, have to look at other ways of getting it back.

that pic reminds me of the guiness label my dad had in his angila for years ;)

When i bought my last miggy a year ago i got pulled over by the police even though the car was insured and taxed! The police computer hadnt shown it was insured, the police officer told me it can take 48 hours to show up on their computer. Not worth risking it in my opinion.

Quick question to OP? If you were not planning to tax it, then surely your insurance would be invalid if you were to drive it on a public road. I hope you werent planning to risk driving it uninsured as well?
-
Tax and Insurance is there for a reason...
What you have to think of firstly is that if pulled then.....
a) You will lose car
b) Prob get crushed or massive cost to get it out of the pound once you have proved you have insurance and tax.
c) The fine you will get (£1000+)
d) Points on your licence (which will affect your insurance on all cars that you drive)
You have three options
1) Tax it for 6 months (Then once home reclaim tax back) and add it as a additional car to you current insurance policy for a day or two so you can legally drive it back.
2) Find a company that can trailer it back for you at a cost per mile (Cheaper than the fine / point etc)
3) Or don't buy it and find one that has Tax / Mot

Your car insurance is subject to (amongst other stuff) your car being 100% road
worthy and legal to drive on the road, if you don't have road tax then your car is not legal to be on the road.
But if you have car insurance on your car and NO TAX but it is damaged or broken into while parked on you private drive then the insurance is VALID.

get the owner to tax it and get some temp insurance for the day there is a site i have used https://www.tempcover.com/Default.aspx
unless its a registered diabled car then you wont be able to tax it until you change the class but it will show as taxed on the data base

I remember those well! There were more labels on cars than on bottles :-X

just an update.... i got the owner to tax it and changed my insurance so was fully legal to drive it home. so i am now the proud owner of a saab 3.0l tid vector. it is immaculate inside and out, and loaded with toys. never owned a saab before but well chuffed with it. very powerful! and the fuel gauge barely moved on my 80 mile trip back home. :)
if i can ever figure out how to upload photos i will do.
-
Don't forget to SORN and cash in the tax on the car you just moved the insurance off.. otherwise you might get fined for that, too ;) (Can't have a car taxed but uninsured anymore)
-
the bmw is sitting off road in my driveway, the tax on it runs out end of feb so keeping it on as an incentive to any potential buyer
-
Here's hoping they don't catch you, then.. otherwise:
If a vehicle does not have insurance, the registered keeper could:
receive a fixed penalty of £100
have their vehicle wheel-clamped, impounded, or destroyed
face a court prosecution, with a possible maximum fine of £1000
