All depends on the set, some will recognise USB HDD's (and provide the power for them) and some won't.

The problem with DVD recorders is that the only interface available is analogue, and that defeats the entire object.

My Panasonic works quite happily with a HDD, in fact, I think that's what the manual suggests. Only problem you might have is that it can't supply enough current to spin it up. Suck it and see, I'm afraid, or have a google around and see if there are any reports that suggest a particular drive will work.

Not found anything that can't supply enough juice to spin up a 320GB Iomega lappy sized drive I have here, although they did have the decency to include two seperate means of getting extra juice if required.

Our main telly is about 3yrs old, so no USB shite. Not that it matters, a perfectly good Core2 quad MCE underneath it ;D.
But cheapo Tesco Special TV in her sewing room has USB, and can play from 2.5" HDD. No record option, although there is an upgrade for about £30 for this (firmware and a new remote I think). But we dont need it.

Thanks for all the replies :y

Right, bought Mrs AA a TV with PVR.
In the set up, it looks for a USB drive 'C' or 'D' (FAT format).
I've got a WD USB drive that I want to try, but it's 'E' drive.
Need to change the drive letter to 'C' or 'D', but, as both PC and laptop already use 'C' & 'D', neither are available.
How can I get around it?
-
If the D drive on the PC or laptop is your cd/dvd drive just change that to E or whatever you want and change the external drive to D oh and make sure the format on it is FAT

No, they're both partitioned hard drives.
-
You should be able to still re-assign them in the drive manager as a temporary fix then change them back after. seems odd that it needs to be C or D

Yes. can't see a way of changing it either.

What happens when you plug drive onto tv?
Disk manager allows to assign drive letters

It asks me to select drive C or D.
I know disc manager allows me to assign drive letters, but the hard drive on both my computers are partitioned C/D.

if you re-assign that drive to C, fat format
then re-assign one of your partioned drives to E wouldnt that allow tv to see drive C which would be your re-assigned usb drive ???
-
Eh? This is a portable drive?
Is this portable drive partitioned?
-
Can't imagine the tv giving a toss about windoze naming...

It's OK, got it working :y
Thanks for all suggestions :y
