Nah. I wouldn't.  A dead end technology.

Dell have now officially announced they now longer sell them. Samsung are unofficially pulling out. Acer are trying to shift too much old stock, so aren't doing anything new. HP/Compaq seem to be the only players lefts, and we all know the turmoil their PC hardware business is in!

Netbooks - too slow, too small to use on lap, too, well, useless ;D.

One or 2 people may still have a niche use, but netbooks have been mostly overtaken by gay tablets at the consumer end, and ultrabooks at the prosumer end.

Bought mine new about a year ago, approx £180.

TBH, it barely gets used. Couldn't even tell you where it is currently, probably in the glovebox, which is where it seemed to live...

And to add to that, my £109 gay tablet thingy gets used almost daily.  But is only good for web and email.

agreed TheBoy.. they may be useful for short time usage like email and some web .. but screen/keyboard not practical and they are slow..may be suitable for kids..  I wont recommend them personally..

ps: their only advantage is they are small and easy to carry..

Aye, I know it, up on the old airfield, not far from the prison.

As I said in another thread recently.. Mine is the computer I use most.

A laptop is too big to use comfortably on the sofa whilst also balancing my tea and a beer on my lap, while watching TV. Anything without a keyboard is unusable. I can put up with a small display when I haven't got umpteen windows full of source code open. I've got fed up with lugging bulky a desktop spec laptop around.

The problem for Netbooks came when Microsoft got scared and badgered all the suppliers into only selling them with Windoze on. Post-XP windows isn't really suitable for them.

Whilst XP on a netbook starts faster, I reckon (certainly on mine), W7 runs faster once its up and running.

Given the target market and the market size, manufacturers would have been a bit daft (at the time) to put Linux on as 'cheap' Linux distributions probably even now aren't quite ready for prime time.  And no way could Dell/HP/Acer/etc support desks have dealt with it.  Even if netbooks were still popular, and people are more used to using 'computers' based on iOS, webOS and Android, I suspect the majority would only buy netbooks for Windows compatibility.

If you want to stay with netbooks, stock up with spares, as I reckon Intel will drop Atom PDQ now...

I like the silent treatment. I get so much done. And without her moaning about it :D
