Title: Water in the rear passenger footwell

Hi all
I know this is probably an old chestnut but I am having a problem with water in the rear passenger side footwell in my facelift 2.6 cd. I had this problem on a previous prefacelift mig which was sorted by cleaning out the drain at the front (very difficult on this car due to the pollen filter can't get my hand anywhere near the bottom)  and the problem was solved, I have done this twice on this car and thought I'd sorted it, but apparently not as I noticed today I have water in the back again I've checked the drain and it is clear the only thing I did notice is that unlike my previous preface miggy this one does not seem to have a drain at the bottom it has a solid bung, water appears to drain via a hole that cables exit at the front of the drain is this correct. I can only assume that during a recent long lasting torrential downpour the drain filled up allowing water to get into the car. Any ideas as its really starting to wind me up  its a real pain in the bum drying it all out. cheers :(

Assuming you can tell the difference between coolant water and rain water it's probably from the scuttle drain.  On my facelift, the 'bung' can be pushed out with a blunt tool like a 1/2 inch socket extension but I would describe it as a 'beak'.  It is a grommet with a side-exit designed to be closed at rest and prevent engine-bay fumes from being sucked into the passenger cabin by the heater fan.  it can be persuaded to drain-off water in-situ by dexterous prodding with a stick or afore-mentioned socket extension.  Just look for water exiting onto the box-member (doh!) under the bonnet while you prod different areas of the grommet.  When you see water gushing hold it there until it stops.

Macho blokes with thick arms can't reach the grommet past the pollen filter - neither can I.  It is possible to replace it if you poke it out though, from the underside.

If you have decayed leaves and gunge in there it is advisable to remove, clean and replace it.  I have had repeated problems when I just drain the surplus water off.

Thanks Chris, its definitely rain water coolant level hasn't changed water is clear when mopped out, will do what you suggested cheers.

I have been through all this and my problem was solved by taking the windscreen out and resealing.

I'm a skinny guy with thin arms and I cant reach it, but a helpful VX main dealer mechanic got to it , removed it  cleaned it and replaced for me with no charge! hows that for service!

One tip I have come up with is to thread a length  of 1mm single double insulated mains wire down through the " beak" bend it over the forward edge of the scuttle and then loosely twist the two ends of the wire together. Once done, a quick pull back and forwards will clear the blockage. It does not look pretty, but it works for me!
