Title: PVR time, again....
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 29 December 2011, 17:47:17
Gonna buy myself a late chrimbo pressie.....and ive decided on either...

Humax HDR-FOX T2 Freeview+ HD PVR Receiver (500GB)

or

SONY SVRHDT500B.CEK Digital TV Recorder

both the same spec, i think
both roughly the same price.... circu £225 bought thro topcashback

The Sony has the advantage at the moment, as it will 'talk' to my Sony tv

Anybody got either the Sony or Humax models im looking at??

We've had the Humax for about 5 months, it replaced the none HD version. Have had no problems at all, dead easy to use, record two programmes while you watch a third etc etc  :y :y :y
No problems linked to a Samsung telly either.

We have the Humax FreeSAT - (not FreeVIEW) - and have had no problems at all in 3 years .. if the freeview one is as good then well worth it IMHO .. :)

I use neither, I'm a simple MCE man.  Just upgraded to HD by simply changing the tuner. TunerfreeMCE deals with all the iPlayer, ITVPlayer and CH4/5 catchups.  Added advantage of loads of utilities to strip out all the adverts automatically, to save F-FWDing through.  And it natively plays just about any format ::)

Currently running with 4 Freeview tuners, and also 2 Extenders to watch around the house.

Its an old Core2 Quad, seriously contemplating upgrading it to a Sandy Bridge i5.  Not buying a new hard drive yet, though, which is desperately needs, as the existing 1.5Tb drive is creaking.

//Edit - forgot, it does all my tunes and my pics as well

If MCE was not an option, I reckon it would be the Hummie for me, although not sure I could live with the limitations.

For me, it also has to be easy enough and stable enough so she can record her Lark Rise to Candleford shite. Else I'm in trouble.

But unfortunately that means it's all to easy to fill the bloody recording schedule with all sorts of crap, meaning that not only does SWMBO hog the live telly with shite, she also hogs the telly with recorded shite and either I can't mangage to record anything myself or I don't get the chance to watch it if I do.  >:( >:( >:(

And then she moans when I spend all evening on the laptop! You can't win!  :-X :-X

I've had the Humax 9200T PVR for about 5 years, it broke once within the two year warranty, and a new box arrived the next day with no quibble. I've also got the Humax Foxsat HDR which is also very good, but not quite so intuitive with the handset as the PVR.  :y

AA, as you have it networked, presumably you have played content stored on your PC to it.....but will it let you move content from the PVR to the PC?

Im actually swaying towards the Humax now as its totally unclear to me if the Sony one will network  :-\

No, I haven't tried doing that.

You know the Sony one simply won't work, or do even what it claims to.

So, given your shortlist, only 1 left ;D

Im actually still pleased with the sony tv, @ £400 a year ago, for what it does  :y ....the only thing i missed out on, was, John Lewis had them for £400 plus 5yr guarantee....for a few days until they sold out....when they got them back in stock, price went upto £500 iirc.
I managed to get mine from Comet with bog standard guarantee....few days after they sold out too.

Sooo.....i think Humax is they way to go.....looking at the specs again, the Humax seems to play more formats than the Sony.....Just got to wait until payday next week  :y

Seems a lot of Phony TVs, esp from W series era, might need that 5yr warranty. Hope yours survives.  Though I guess for every duff on, Phony stand half a chance of making a good one...

I guess it also makes a difference on how long any tv is turned on for......

My neighbour got an 40" led tv (carnt remember the make) same time as me, 12 months ago from John Lewis......he was pleased he got the 5yr warranty.....however he's got two kids.....his tv is on from the time they get up.....till he goes to bed.....probably 16 hours a day.....mines on for about 3 to 4 hrs a day........

Research I did suggests that the dongle route can give patchy results depending on installation, distance from router, type of router, type of dongle etc., so I have just ordered a pair of Solwise passthrough homeplugs for £52 inclusive, as described here: http://www.avforums.com/forums/networking-nas/731564-homeplug-faq.html. As you can see these also have limitations. I will advise on my results. :y

My tv is connected wifi to my router and has no issues with connectivity......personally i think if the tv wasnt connected over wifi and wanted to know how good connectivity was going to be where the Humax was going to sit, I would have placed my lappy there and tried copying a 200mb-300mb file accross the network from the lappy.....save spending £52 when possibly a £5 usb wifi dongle would work, imo  :)

Fair point, but mine is to connect to my desktop through two brick walls. Friends with similar setups have had mixed results with dongles.:y
