Ensure a decent connection in the bulb holder & use a quality brand. Cheap lamps can & do cause a problem for the lamp check electrickery. ;)
-
If its when you first turn the ignition on that's normal. It does all the checks then you press the brake pedal, it goes off and that's it.
-
oh yes its says breaklight check when started but on display after check it comes up on display brake light but all brake lights are working fine cheers :y :y
-
I get this everytime I turn ignition on. Just think it's set like that
-
oh great its not just me then its never done this before until 29th dec i thought strange ::) my mate checked lights while i apply the brake all working so i dont understand why its happening its a fault on rear lights ::) ::)

You're supposed to. The message appears, you press the pedal & if both brake lights come on the system is happy & extinguishes the message. If a lamp fails, you get the message to inform you that you need to buy a new lamp.

thats what im saying its saying brake light which i thought means you need a bulb but my rear lights are working so why is it telling me to check brake light when lights ok :y :y

When you first turn your ignition you should get the message .... brake light check. When you press the brake pedal the message goes away assuming that both brake lamps are working. If you get the message appear during normal driving it means that a brake lamp has failed or you've fitted cheapo brake lamps or there's a fault in the check system (unlikely)

They've aged and now they offer less resistance than when they were new. Replace with a pair of decent branded ones and the message will go away, it's a false error.

Don't worry Glenny Boy. I'm too inquisitive for my own good most of the time. Coupled with myself being a bit mechanically retarded doesn't help ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Glenny Boy if it is any consolation I went through exactly same situation - neighbour checked lights and all fine but fault light came on. At the finish I just put new bulbs in and no probs thereafter.
-
Its a resistance thing.
You should know that, James Bond wise, resistance is futile..... ;D

Lets clarify (For post 1998 cars).
Switch on (without foot on brake), you should get:
CHECK BRAKELIGHT
Foot on brake, this should extinguish, if it doesn't, its likely a failed brake switch.
If you get:
BRAKE LIGHT
thats the check control unhappy with the bulb conditions, so check bulb, holder, brightness, and if necessary, replace bulbs for quality items.
-
Pre 98 similar, but no CHECK BREAKLIGHT, just illuminates the CHECK icon until brake pressed.
-
I had a similar problem after pulling one of the bulbs to measure the quiescent current (prompted by another thread on here) a week ago.
Next time I drove off, the BRAKE LIGHT warning came on and I stopped the car. It is a doddle to drop the rear seat and pull the light sub-assembly out and you can press the pedal and see the lamp at the same time. What a design!!!!
Re-seating the bulb was all that was required in my case. Mighty odd as the connections are as clean as can be (visually).
