I just removed a spark plug from each side. On the passenger bank it was as I expected it to be, but on the drivers bank the plug seemed to be covered in heavy grey deposits, and the other half was quite black (but not wet).
The electrode on the drivers side one is much worn down, yet the gaps are all pretty much right, so it looks like it's been regapped.
I also note that the screw on ends on the plugs (don't know the technical term!) were loose which I guess can't be helping.
The Dizzy cap looks reasonable... but one of the HT lead electrical connections got left behind on the plug :(
I've not looked inside the cap for tracking or the state of the rotor arm, but I'm probs right in thinking plugs, leads, cap and rotor are the best things to replace at this time as a matter of course?
Also... do these things have Points that need setting up? (I remember them from my fiesta days, hate the things...)!

If it's like the Rover SD1. The later ones were electronic, so no points

Well, I'd say ditch the dizzy, put a Megasquirt on it and go wasted spark. You don't want a dizzy when you're off road yomping through big puddles. :y
On a serious note, the plugs clearly aren't that special, nor the leads if the ends are coming off. I'd replace them. Worth doing a compression check while you're at it just so you know where you are.
I don't think that injection system ever was fantastic idling. Mate of mine had a TVR 390 that was really moody when cold.
It went "OK" when hot though. He got the fright of his life the first time he used a sat nav. Hoofed it up to 130 on the bypass test track and sat nav said 145. :o
Gearbox had no doubt died and someone hadn't put the right speedo drive gear in. ;D
