Had a metallic knocking noise start on the front drivers side when going over bumps/uneven road the other day, and steering was very slightly off. Thought it was ARB links or bushings, which I was planning to sort at the weekend. Noise got progressively worse (louder and less bumpiness needed to make it) up to yesterday. Then on way home last night and heard something metal fall off the car and clunk along the underside as I was driving. Once it had fallen off the steering seemed to straighten up and the knocking noises stopped. Drove back along the road in the dark but couldn't see what had come off, so assumed ARB link had failed completely and come off. To my surprise when I looked under the car today, all ARB links are in place and fine.
I've had a good scout about underneath but can't see anything missing, loose or damaged! I'm beginning to think someone must have dropped a spanner or something somewhere in the past and it had finally worked it's way loose to foul the roll bar or something and then finally popped out last night.
Any other bright ideas for what is now missing off my car?

Old wishbone bolt trapped had worked loose maybe :-\

Not very helpful I know, but it would have been worth taking it off the road earlier and making a thorough inspection in good light. It sounds as if you could have had a very serious problem, and may yet do so.
I would still make a careful inspection, comparing the two sides if necessary, before using it again.
There should be some marks where the banging was occurring although shiny metal might be too much to ask for.
I hope you find it.

Unfortunately today was the first chance I had to look at in in light as it's dark when I go to work and dark when I get home. The best I could do during the week was jump around on the sills in the dark to bounce the suspension to try to recreate the noise - but I couldn't, so took the gamble (potentially stupidly) to carry on driving it.
Like I say I've had a good scout around and compared both sides and can't see anything amiss. Also the fact that it did the last couple of miles home last night with no noise, loss of fluids, or pull on steering (although I was driving carefully as something had just fallen off and I didn't know what it was yet).
I was planning to stick it in the garage for a timing belt change over the next week or so anyway, so will also get them to have a look whilst it's there to see if they can spot anything.
