Hi all, Still miffed at what happened to me on way home from work last night. Travelling home at 10-45pm i was nearing my home when i passed a police traffic car. After it passed by going in the other direction i noticed it braked and turned round to follow me. It followed until i was nearly outside my house when it flashed me to pull over.
The officer came over to me and asked the usual... is this your car etc etc. I asked why they had stopped me and was told that my number plate had been recognised by their inboard camera as being on their wanted list. I was told that the police in Wales had evidence that my "car" was involved in a "driveaway", namely leaving a petrol station without paying. He couldn't or wouldn't say when this had happened but asked me how long i had been the keeper of the car. When i explained that i had only bought the car last December and hadn't been to Wales for at least 3 years he told me it could be a former keeper or that most likely my number plate had been cloned.
Looks like i will have to wait and see if i get anymore stops etc due to some scumbag driving round Wales in a green miggy est. with my number plate. Any thoughts or ideas on what to do next?

Had a G reg Carlton CDi new (company car) - swapped it due to hi mileage after 18 months - got another. One night followed Renault van, which had exactly the same reg number as my R reg Carlton, in the later Carlton!! Renault plate cloned - odds on this happening?

2,576,327 to 1

actually I calculate it to be
1 In 1,188,137,600
based on possible permutations of number plates, the population density, the number of vehicles on the road, and percentage of populace with criminal tendencies willing to drive a renault.

as a one off stop, could be absolutely anything that caused the cop to stop and speak to you. The ANPR kit misread the plate, he didn't notice it was on a Mig instead of an Escort, looking for a reason to stop you anyway and blamed the kit, yadda, yadda, yadda....
If stopped again, ask to see first hand the information displayed. If not allowed to, remind them of Data Protection Act.... after all, they have stopped you and are speaking to you, based on data which may (or may not) involve you.... If stonewalled, note Officer shoulder number and contact force concerned requesting information held. Be prepared to pay a fee. If nothing else, will advise that force of your displeasure and hopefully initiate additional marker on ANPR kit so as to preclude a repeat performance....
