Best/easiest way to remove a lip seal is to drill a small hole 120 degrees apart around it, just start a self tapper into each hole & they give you something to pull the seal out with. :y :y Ease it out a bit at at time all the way round.
By rights there are proper seal 'knocker inners' ie rings that fit a sleave that you clobber to push the seal in uniformly, but you can push them in so far by hand & gently tap them into place with a block to spread the blow. Don't bend them though, they're metal backed & will bend.

........and if the seal lip on the new one gets caught and damaged on the crank nose it`ll leak worse than the old one.

Cheers guys so its a simple case of rip out and quick clean up then tap back in gently as possible :y

Yes, but as Rob pointed out, make sure the sealing lip (the bit in the middle) goes over the shaft without damage. :y

Sweet. Its easy for me to get to it atm cause the engines out of the car and when it finaly come off the engine stand ill be sure to take care. :y

Lightly oil the new seal :y I neglected this and had to pull the box back out to fit a new seal :-[

Lots of the jobs are made far easier whilst the engine is out especially the exhaust manifold gaskets :y

It's a 3.0 but previous owner put 3.2 manifolds on. I am just double checking but i will now use 3.2 gaskets wouldnt i? and cheers for the tip about a bit of oil round the new seal :y :y :y :y

Yes if you have a 3.0 engine but are using 3.2 exhaust manifolds use 3.2 exhaust manifold gaskets. If you use 3.0 ones you will have a small gap which will make a terrible blowing noise. I made this mistakeand called at Bargain Booze on the way home ;D
