This may be a stooooooopid question.I ve just bought an Alpine IVA-D310RB dvd head unit and I am putting it into my 1998 Elite.I have the BOSE sound system installed and I know I have to replace the speakers before I change the headunit. Will the rear shelf take 6x9 speakers without any cutting,if not, what are the size of the standard Elite speakers so i can get some Alipine aftermarket ones.Hope you guys can help as you have before.Cheers Nick

Dont you have a rear blind on the parcel shelf ??? and i think they were 6.5" subwoofers not speakers. Thats what they are on facelift models so assuming they would be the same on p/f/l. :y :y

I have a rear blind on it, sorry I forgot to mention that lol. I would like to keep car as original as poss so I'm wanting speakers on shelf.

you already have subwoofers on the rear parcel shelf. the bass/midrange units for the rear are in the rear doors.

Some bugger removed the BOSE amp in mine so I wired in normal speakers on the rear parcel shelf...
Nightmare trying to get hold of POD speakers though so got some from Ebay.
Will do it properly one day...installing speakers into the base holes.

2woody these are only 2ohm speakers and i dont want to damage my new headunit so going for a full conversion

What diameter are the holes in the shelf, and I`ll try to find something that will fit for you.
With regard to your original question, no, I would not advise cutting the shelf of a monocoque chassis car as it can weaken the torsional strength, however, providing you have enough room underneath the shelf, it still may be possible to fit 6x9`s with an mdf spacer underneath the original holes.
