The code 4 flashes small gap 8 flashes then big gap and same again

I think what was meant is that your old battery is responsible for generating the code you read. In other words it is historic.
With Tech 2 and probably lots of other code readers it is possible to " clear all codes" then see if it comes back. Not sure if this can be done using paper clip/ pedal trick, I have never used either.
