Title: V6 lose coolant - mayonnaise in the oil filler tube
Post by: Lund on 16 January 2012, 18:29:16
Hallo

My sisters Omega V6 X30XE sometimes loses coolant.
There is much mayonnaise i the filler tube. Not only the cap as it can be in these cold days. Because the car running some miles every day, and it have brand new oil.
One day she passing by with it, and a lot of water comming down over the engine-transmission. A carage have then putting some "damn" radiatorleak-stop on it, becasue they did not know were the leak came from, they where guessed it could be the headcasket.
And then it have not lost any coolant for a long time.
Just until today.

Today i jacked up the car, started it and let it heat uċ to 94 deg. with the climate off, else it was difficult to get it warm.
But there came non coolant. I could only see some drops from previous on the buttom of engine and transmission. I used a camera to check the HBV, and the big steel pipe conected to the rear of the engine. But not visible sight of any drops of coolant.
I think it is strange with the mayonnaise in the filler tube. And then at the same time lost coolant.

Any good ideas ???   :'(
excuse my poor english

have you checked your dipstick for mayonnaise?

Mayo in the filler neck is quite normal if the car does lots of short journeys, and isn't necessarily anything to worry about.

Is there any signs of mayo on the dip stick, or oil in the coolant header tank?  If not, it sounds like a classic HBV failure.

Remember the HBV will only leak when the climate control in the car is set to a particular setting, and even then it is not always possible to see it leaking.

Hi and welcome to the forum :y

The symptoms you describe sound like the Heater Bypass Valve is leaking. Its normal to get mayo in the oil filler tube if the car only travels for short journeys.

Many thanks for the replies.

The car do not have any short travels, it go for about 2 x 24 miles every day.

(My own Omega from 2003 2.6 do about 3 miles to times a week, and do not have any mayo in the cap.)

No mayo on the dip stick ...

The oil have done 310 miles, so it is still fresh.

You do have a good point, because why didn't the coolant just not piss out all the time.
I had check the HBV with a camera, but did not find any leak.
Should there not have been some visible goop/seal from the radiator sealant.
