Post by: Cookie Monster on 19 January 2012, 08:08:21
Hi guys.
It seems from what i read that alot of you have more than one car and not always omegas.
I`m being seduced by a 230e i have seen for sale locally and just wonder if anyone has any experience of them.
Its a 1999 230e with 81000 , petrol , new cambelt and mot, £1500.

Cheers Adam

That will be a w210 E class, just watch out for rot almost anywhere as that model is very prone to it, the 230 engine has a timing chain so maybe it's that that has been replaced :y

Unfortunatly yes it is rust, rust and more rust. Some favourite places are bottom of all doors, inner front wings, under rear seat, tailgates on estates, around rear lights and probably a dozen other places I can't think of at the moment.

Try google, rust and mercedes, there forums are full of places to find rust.

HTH

Just such a shame they stopped making the legendary Merc 190. I would have bought one of them. Friend at work still drive a 1990 190 and allthough interior is lookiung dated the bodywork is amazing and it is a daily use car with no special treatment given to it.

Front spring top mounts are potentially the most dangerous place they rot but its easily checked,my older W124 E class is still very tidy with only the front wings having needed attention

The spring mounts tend to go at low speed, with a lot of steering applied; turning into drives or parking spaces. Picked up several like that, even when they were fairly new. Due to the already tight wheel/arch clearance it can be quite 'challenging' to do without further damage. Paying someone to fix it properly costs enough to make it only worthwhile if the car is otherwise faultless.

Front subframe can rot with alarming ease but the engine should be bulletproof.

Agreed the 190 is a legend and I ran one for 3 years and still look at them from time to time! :y
