Title: Auxiliary Belt & Tensioner
Post by: Ratty on 20 January 2012, 14:03:12
Hi,

Is there anyone in the Coventry area that could supply and fit the above for me please? just phoned the dealer and they want £76 +VAT for the tensioner and £25 +VAT for the belt, there's got to be a cheaper way, are pattern parts of these any good? I'm arthritic so can't do much these days on the old girl.

Cheers

I think it's always best to use genuine parts, and worth doing the water pump at the same time. A trade card may help with prices, or you could pm andyc for confirmation.
I'm sure someone local will be along soon with proper advice!

Thanks, I should have said that they are TC prices. the waterpump  was done a couple of years ago when the cambelt was done so that should be okay for a while longer

It's a very simple job, even I can do it, slacken the belt off, undo the tensioner, fit new one, replace belt.

Didn't I read somewhere that stuff had to be moved out of the way to fit new belt? don't have to remove the old one as it melted and disintegrated  :'(

Can I get away with just replacing the pulley bearing part of the tensioner? is it sold separately?

Yep - its about £25 from Vx on Tc, belt about £20.

You need to undo one bolt to get belt into position - its on your right hand side to right of bagpipes.
Fit belt to water pump pulley last - it's easy to just slide it onto the smooth pulley.

Brilliant, thanks dbug  :y

is that inc VAT? I may have misheard him earlier and thought he said ex VAT

If you ask for the tensioner you will be sold the bracket and spring loaded arm along with the plastic pulley. Can't remember how much they cost but £76 is plausible.

The plastic pulley (complete with shiny new bearings) does cost around £25 and is a 5 minute job to change. Undoing the bracket on the air con pipe to get the new belt in place takes longer.......

Shame the cars off the road, if you could have gotten to Wolves then I would have fitted the parts for you for free...

Thanks, Somehow I doubt she would even make the trip out of Cov, not only with no water circulation but these Omegas are bloody heavy with no power steering at all, I drove it 1 mile back home when it went and it felt like i was driving my Dads old Foden truck circa 1960s

But thanks for the thought though  :y

:o :o :o
I got quoted £90 for a tensioner pulley  >:(...ended up re greasing the bearings instead .

When my belt broke on my last car i was doing 70mph and the pulley shattered bouncing underneath the car  :o i drove for about 2 miles smelling shredded belt ..it wasnt a pretty sight when i opened the bonnet , the belt had wrapped itself snuggly around the back of every pulley . Quite frightening when you lose power steering trying to get round a roundabout looking at all the dash lights glowing and temp gauge hitting max  ::)

I was stationary when mine went, had just got into the car and started her up, had to fill in a bit of paperwork, then realised the cabin was filling up with smoke, engine off, door open and out quicker than a scalded cat. Popped the bonnet, let the smoke clear a bit, then could see the damage, my response was OH MY GOSH!!! what-a-to-do (or words to that effect  ;) As the crow flies I live about 1/2 a mile from that point, 1 mile by road, so decided to take it home, didn't dare look at the temp gauge.

Update:

All fitted and running as sweet as a nut, for someone who's not done these before it's not as easy as made out by those with experience, had to take the bagpipes and the SAI front pipe off and undo the Air/con bracket to gain access, once that lot was out of the way the belt went on in less than 2 mins and everything back in place in 20 mins, total time 2 hours, I reckon that now I know how to do it I could do it in about an hour.

 :) :)

Cheers for the help and advice from everyone  :) :y

I am about to do the Aux belt on my 1996 Elite, 99k miles on the clock. Would I be advised to change the tensioner pulley at the same time ??

Thanks

Cant advise if you should i guess it depends on mileage and condition of the pulley .... the bearings inside the pulley can be re greased as i was advised to , simply prise out the outer shells re grease and fit the shells back  :y
