Just a heads up to everyone that uses paypal, I had a significant sum of money taken from my paypal account yesterday. :o
It was done in transactions of 5 euros at at time, to a German sounding address that I had never heard of or completed a transaction with. The transactions were a couple of minutes apart, and continued until my balance was less than 5 euros, at which time I guess that paypal stopped the next transaction as I had insufficient funds.
I've raised seperate complaints with paypal for each transaction (took a while!!), and they have confirmed by email that they are investigating the issue, however it may take several weeks before I get my money back!! >:(
I'm just relieved that I didn't have a credit/debit card or bank account setup for making payments with this account, otherwise I suspect I would have been properly cleared out!
Considering that every transaction was identical, and went to the same address, I would have expected paypal to have had a system in place to pick up on and block this, but apparently not!
I'm not at all impressed!!

they must have issues when i paid you and some others every payment which should have been taken direct from my bank account via pay pal was declined yet every payment by my debit card via paypal was not
-
Interesting ..... ??? ??? ???
Did they make payments from your account or request payment that was automatically deducted.
When I have had requests for payments before I had to confirm before deducted
More info would be helpful

Sorry to hear this James - rather shocking. :o :o Just checked mine and all seems ok.I do have it linked to a bank account which sometimes has a few quid in.Any way of making sure everything is secure ? :-\

hope it all works out in the end...annoying though

The payment went straight out without me confirming them. This is the account name they we paid into...

I've just been trying to log back into my account to see what's going on with getting my money back, and it's telling me that my account has been limited, and I have to jump through hoops to get the limitaion lifted. These include changing my password, security questions, and providing my debit or credit card details! break off, no chance!!
I'm gonna phone them. Can some find out the phone number for me please? I might be paranoid but I don't trust the info I'm getting here, and I'm afraid I might call a fake number!!
Cheers guys.

Hope you get it sorted >:(

just checked my account and for some reason my bank account details have already been deleted although for some reason James payment to you failed and they then had to use my visa card that was over a week ago though....hope you get it sorted mate :y

This is 'dangle berries'!! Their call centre is open until 9pm on Saturdays, but because my account has a limition (imposed by them), they won't speak to me after 6:30pm!! >:(
I smell a rather large rat here and, paranoid or not, some poor sod is gonna get both barrels tomorrow when they answer my call!! >:(
Twiglet is not a happy camper!!!

I assume these payment were made because someone hacked into your account and made the payments?? or am i wrong :-\
I have a debit card linked to my paypal account and im actually surprised that when i make a payment, my bank never wants additional security info for payments made. They always do when i make any other payment on a different website.
-
Had mine hacked recently and I am currently in a battle with Paypal over getting my card put back on the account. They want a copy of my bank statement and I refuse to give it to them. I have already given enough ID and proof of address and I am sick of the shifting goalposts towards resolution of this.
Very close to closing my account. As someone who dabbles in hacking (legally) I still cannot work out how they hacked my account as it wasn't through knowing my password.

ditto on all the info they want...they seem to want to know the ins and outs of a ducks arse which i argued with them about ...you really do have to give over quite a lot of very sensative information which really cant be nessisary.

worth a look at as if you use this it hides your IP address so harder to trace and it looks like they use this to sneak in with.

I do believe that using a net anonymity tool is illegal in this country. I think it has something to do with the computer misuse act although not 100% sure.....

i think it should be banned full stop as the only people to use them are people that commit crime >:(

I have to assume that this is the case although, like Guffer, I have absolutely no idea how this could of happened!
I have never liked paypal. I think their website is very poorly laid out and confusing, and like Paul says, they want to know the end of a ducks fart before you can set up your account properly! I have accepted their shortcomings until, but I have always believed that at least my account will be secure. Not so it seems!!
Because I sell a fair few bits on the forum, I need to be able to give people a way of paying, but I think from now on I'll do it using direct back transfer to an account setup specifically to receive payments, and then transfer the money out straight away. I can't see how I'm supposed to trust paypal anymore. :(
-
So sorry to hear this James, hope it all gets cleared up quickly with no financial loss to you. As you are aware I drove over to you for the part I needed, simply because I don't trust things like paypal. I had to decline the next part from another member as payment by paypal was required, and it was too far to drive. Too much personal information flying around the internet, I'm not going to add mine... Good luck mate.. :y

Thanks for all the messages of support guys. :y
Quick update for you. All of the money was safely back in my account by yesterday. I called Paypal today and had a long conversation with a very helpful fella, and I'm a little more comfortable with the situation now.
He did confirm that the only way some can make payment from a Paypal account is if they have the password. Most of the time hackers get hold of the password from some other online account, and then try using it with Paypal, as lots of people use the same passwords for several, if not all, online security functions.
I certainly won't get caught out like that again, so if the above applies to you, I can only suggest that you change your passwords asap.
:y

glad its all sorted :y
-
Yes, that's a bit of good news. :y
-
So sorry for your trouble pal, but thanks for posting it. Sounds like you're on the way to a successful resolution :y
Does make you wonder though :-\
-
Nope, proxy/anonomising is not illegal here.
I will say, if you need a fully verified account do this.....
Setup account
Add bank account
Verify Bank account
Remove account once verified
Add a credit card (I have a specific, internet protection guaranteed card that I use purely for this)
Mine has £500 limit
This way, my bank is not associated with my Paypal and if someone does get in, I've got PP protection and CC protection. Also worth saying, never leave a balance on there. Even without an account added, I can still send money to my CC.
