Title: RIP mr washing machine
Post by: ninjapirate on 22 January 2012, 19:10:50
Yup me washing machine had enough of my socks and comited suicide, only about 4 years old but very hard water area stopped pumping out, was a bit crap anyway tbh. just ordered one from tesco a Beko, seems a good enough deal only 1200rpm tho but 9kg load.
anyone know much about Beko?

Dont think Beko are up to much tbh mate, but as is always the way with these things, it depends on your budget at the time. ;)
Weve had an LG direct drive for about 10 years now (gets a lot of use and abuse, and also very hard water area),but its had the death rattle for about 18 months now. Really need to sort another one in the very near future. ::)

did notice they all seem to be cold feed only now? i think that suits me better, electric being cheaper then oil heated hot water.

In an attempt to aid its life you could run it with no clothes in once month on its highest temperature to "clean" the pipes out. You can also get some powdered stuff from hotpoint that you run once a month - i know the mrs. uses it and we live in a hard water area and not had any probs.

Seems daft tbh.Cant see the cost of usual methods of heating water being more expensive than running that big kettle element in the bottom of a washing machine. :-\

Trouble is that washing machines dont use much water these days so never realy start to pull hot water through.

That and it helps the marketing energy rating figures as water heating is 100% efficient!

maybe if your house has gas or electric heating up the hot water, but when you run on oil it must be cheaper to pay for electric to heat the element in washing machine. i think they might do it to get the A++ ratings tbh, other wise you wouldnt be able to rate it.

Had a Beko for a good while and its still running without any real issues (door switch went after 4 years but was replaced easily)
If you are in a hard water area use the limescale remover stuff for washing machines (Calgon) it does work and help

Planning on selling this place soon and moving, but of course that could take forever so whilst ive got the old washing machine out the way, (water comes into the house behind it) i might fit a water softener. To be honest, me actualy remembering to buy and use extra stuff after more then a month is pretty slim lol
aslong as beko arnt total junk!

Thats a good point actually.I was saying to Mrs Albs the other day that it might be an idea to run the hot tap to get rid of the cold water in the pipes before firing up the washing machine. On the other hand,we are on a water meter. ::) ;D

Bought a topline chest freezer (Icelands own brand) almost thirty years ago.The bloody thing wont die.It stood outside for a whole winter after we moved house, until I built a shed to put it in.I was confident (and happy) that it would never work again and wouldnt be taking up space in the shed. Plugged it in, switched it on and the bloody thing started working. That was about 6 years ago and its still going strong.Ive used it as a workbench, spraypainted parts on it - allsorts really, but it keeps on chugging along no matter what.
Got a perfectly good new(and empty) freezer in the house which is so far redundant until the old cheap Iceland contraption decides its had enough. I suppose the moral of the story is - you dont always get what you pay for. ::) ;D

We live in a hard water area and when I stripped our 10 year old  machine down for a new pair of bearings a couple of years back there was no sign of calcium on the element or any other part of it.

I think these days the softening effect of the detergent plus the fact that not much water is heated, and normally only to 40 degrees C or so, means that the hard water myth is perpetuated only to sell potions to put in washing machines. ;)

Probably be a different story if boil washing nappies every day, granted.

Agreed.I noticed similar when I stripped mine to put new bearings in it a couple of years ago. :y

General rule of thumb for washing machines is every £100 you spend = 1 year over & above the 2 year EU warranty, so in your case it would be quite reasonable to expect the machine to give at least 4 years trouble free service.

As far as Beko themselves go, I'd say they are just as good as any other manufacturer when compared "pound for pound".

I ended up buying a Miele as I was totaly pissed off with fixing machines after a few years (had Hotpoint's and Zanussi's).

They do get a lot of hammer in our house though!

A short while back, we rented a washing machine from Radio Rentals, now Box Clever. It was a whirlpool and cost £17 month to rent. Had no option at the time.
However, after 11 years...it started leaking, was going rusty in places and did not work right. So we told them to cancel and pick up the machine.
After 48 hours, they phoned to say the Manager was PLEASED to be able to offer us the machine for....£120 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Swmbo went ballistic on the phone at them...peed myself listening ;D

48 hours later they called again to say that the offer to purchase would regretfully end in another 48 hours. Swmbo off on another one ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You will be able to work out the figures yourself ;)

I chucked it in the garage, and after 3 months, a flea bitten rusty van arrives with two old boys well over retiring age. I offered to help them, but was declined, so watched a fantastic comedy show for half an hour while they tried to get in on the van ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
My only regret is not filming it for Youtube ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Original problem is likely to be the pump filter being blocked, 5 min job and it would probably be fine!

probably, however i did empty the filter think the pump had stopped working. it was running crap anyway, would take hours and hours to do a normal wash, spent most its time trying to break out the laundry room and didnt even manage to wash clothes very well so it was time it got recycled.  :y
I was going to bash it apart to have a look inside to see how much limescale was in it just out of curiosity but didnt get time before they took it away.
Next one is the dishwasher that i still havnt fixed/replaced lol

usually a specific sump for the pump underneath as well as the filter at the bottom/front

Beko are great machines worked on many during my time, very easy to fix unlike miele/bosch etc just to name a couple,
having been in the trade for some 30 plus years imo the more basic the better the less there is to go wrong,
