Title: Gearbox Death or Something Else
Post by: ajr3773 on 01 February 2012, 11:08:20
Working away this week but wife has phoned me this morning to advise that the car would not pull away as normal this morning. When it does pull away there is no power and really struggles and when she stops at a junction the car stalls. Pulling up at junctions and stalling has occurred for the last 3 months however this was only occuring on start up but we put it down to a possible air leak which we thought we had cured. There is no noise, burning or anything other than distinct lack of power. To be fair she has only tried R & D, she hasn't tried gears 1,2 & 3 as yet. I've been advised by 2woody that it may just be a faulty selector switch but it needs put on the ramp to determine. Has anyone else had similar issues or can anyone shed any light on what it's likely to be and the likely cost of repair. The gearbox was drained cleaned and new gaskets fitted back in September and new transmission oil put in. For information it's a 2001 3.0ltr Elite Auto. Thanks in advance.

Yes all working fine. Been through all the gears and they all light up as each gear is selected.

Needs fault codes reading...

it'll be stuck in "limp-home". Which means third gear only, hence the apparent lack of power.

easy things to check ( which i'll do at the weekend ) are lack of oil through a leak and the selector switch screwed to the side of the gearbox. Then it's a code-read event, which I'll also do.

If it's internal, then it's replacement 'box time. I don't have any just at the minute - I had a purge and threw my old ones out some while back.

No fault codes other than 48 & 31 which i know are normal. Car has driven fine for last 2 days with only one incidence of loss of power which rectified itself within 500 yards. I'm now suspecting its not gearbox related but more of an intermittent sensor issue. Any ideas anyone ??????? Could it possibly be the MAFF sensor?

the fact the the car is pulling away in 3rd gear could be due to various other faults before ou condemn the gearbox .............. eg disconnecting the throttle switch will put the car into limp home mode & have it setting off in 3rd  ;)
