Title: Clutch replacement...
Post by: Psychoca on 11 February 2012, 23:28:32
Can anyone recommend a decent garage in the Peterborough/Spalding area, preferably one that doesn't require me to remortgage the house to get the clutch changed on my very old Mondeo...

Everywhere I have spoken too have quoted North of £400 except Mr. Clutch, who quoted me different prices on different occasions...   Feels like nearly all the garages around here think they can charge main dealer prices...

It's a very long time since I've done a clutch on a RWD car, but apart from the weight of the gearbox there's nothing difficult about changing one. Alignment tools are nice if you have them but you can get away with a MkI eyeball to align the clutch relative to the pressure plate and flywheel.

Early Mondeo clutch replacement time is circa 7 hours labour plus the clutch kit itself, its never going to be a very cheap job :'(

An Astra G isn't the easiest either when you're dropping a gearbox when on your drive.  ;) ;)

Most of the front wheel drive stuff is a subframe out first job these days, the actual gearbox is a piece of pi$$ to get out.

Last clutch I changed was in 1984 on a MK1 Transit, LWB Crew Bus I used for Cub Scouts. On my own on the drive with the help of a trolley jack and no special tools,  heavy but easy really.....I was much younger then though..... :D :D :D

But what do they care .. it's not like they're doing it for free (usually!) ;)

More power and heavier cars means bigger clutches, gearbox input shafts and flywheels......this all results in a setup which requries gearbox removal to change them.

If you think there bad, try doing a 1.9 Golf!
