Title: Lorry Nostalgia
Post by: Seth on 13 February 2012, 11:57:28
The epitome of the 1960/70s road haulage scene:

A lovingly-restored Ergomatic tilt-cabbed AEC Mercury flatbed, with AV505 engine and 6-speed constant-mesh 'box.
Pictured at the Welland Steam Rally a couple of years ago.

A couple from me...

A fine example of my favourite truck from my youth... A 470bhp 4x2 Volvo F16 Globetrotter...

And a truck I spent hours looking at, at Peterborough Truckfest a couple of years ago...

The Austrian owner/driver of this tanker travels all over Europe with it.  It's not one of these trucks that never sees a proper day's work, and the inside of the tank is as spotless as the outside!!!

Nice trucks, but you can't beat a Transconti. When was the last time you saw one though?

Talking of bonneted Scanias:

A very nice V8-powered job arriving at Nottingham's Wollaton Park for an early-90's AEC Rally.
The exhibit is actually the 6-legger AEC wagon aboard the low-loader, that's awaiting some major TLC!

Not seen one on the road for a long time...

My dad had a brand new one circa 1980 when he was driving for Cranfields Flour Mills.  Always said it was the best lorry he ever had.  Just wish he had taken some bloody pictures!!  ::)

Not much Ford about 'em, though a good mechanical spec.
Powered by the iconic 14-litre Cummins lump, so would appeal to many operators (or should have, anyway!) :-\

Yeah,Yeah. ::) :P ;D
I spent 20 years working around trucks, and a lot of time shunting them and trailers around, but never developed any interest in them tbh. Just never floated my boat at all.The objects of desire for the very sad among the workforce were the "Hiab" type cranes on the trucks. Every time an even bigger than the previous biggest one arrived,an orgasmic crowd would gather around to inspect it. ::)
Those of us who had a bit of sense would then gather to take the p1ss. ;D

You mean like this little baby....  ;D

I had originally spec'd a 25t city crane to lift the huge chiller unit condensing coil into place.  When the fella from Abbey said 'I've got a hiab that will do that', I though he was having a laugh...

Similar, but probably bigger in some cases tbh.Everytime they heard a rumour that someone had got a bigger hiab than they had, they would get one bigger. The title of biggest truck mounted Hiab in the country was very important apparently. ::)
100+ ton/metre cranes behind the cab  meant the payload of the truck wasnt much more than 10 tonnes in some cases. Always in demand though and made a lot of money. :y

Was known as Milbank trucks. Now known as David Watson transport.

There are a coupld of trucks at the Heritage centre:

A Leyland Constructor 2 flat back (A130 BRB) with a hyab

and

An ERF Tractor unit (VUT 493X)

Although today, I am mostly hating Land Rovers......AGAIN!

Loving the old AEC. Brings back memories of the Mandator & Leyland Super Comet. You had to DRIVE them!!! I'm a Volvo man myself truckwise, can't beat a good Globie for general living/running, cracking motors so loving the FL too. Reminds me of the 82 FL7 turbo 6 8 legger tipper i used to drive before i had an HGV!!! 4 over 4 range change, no split box but it least it was synchro & had power steering, luxury back then.

Driving a fully auto 57 plate TGA M.A.N. now. Does everything quietly, you hardly have to be there. Not the same somehow but at least Gaffer's promised me another Volly later this year! ::)

I'm not a truck driver but have always loved the very American design influenced 50's British trucks.
Like UK there's a great deal of restored trucks over here with two annual runs passing through the town each year . Watching and listening to these heros of the past is an absolute delight much ,much better than any car show....... :y

Awwhhhh the Bedford 'J' series, in the early 80's I had a 1972 Ambulance version, lovely old truck with the 3.0L 6 cylinder petrol and about 50MPH used it as a Mini Bus for Cub's and often slept in the back of it on camp. :y  I painted it Royal Blue but it remained an Ambulance with blue lights and a new set of air horns courtesy of Cleveland Ambulance who used to run her, I got it from a Racecourse, I sold it to buy a Transit crew bus, a really bad move as the Bedford would have lasted for ever....I wish I still had it.. :( :(
At one point, when a Cleveland Ambulance in managed to wrap itself round a lamp post, front end, on the A19, they had a picture of her at the Ambulance maintenance place that I got the air horns from.. :)

those were the days, if you broke down proper truckers stopped and gave you hand, atllas not anymore. i started driving trucks when i was21yrs of age and the trucks you see at the shows, from the oldest to the newest [up 2003] ihave driven including a few of the yank rigs in the states. the trans-conti was indeed a good truck, but stopping while loaded was a bit of a problem. 44yrs a trucker and I would'nt change a thing.

i bet that had the 2 speed rear axle aswell, very nice machine indeed. had to replace a ts3 in a ballast tractor, it had a cracked cylinder, it exploded & threw bits of piston right down the exhaust system.

Whilst on the Commer theme .............
It's appropriate to include an example of the Karrier marque, as these tended to be at the lighter end of the truck range. Commer, Karrier and Dodge ultimately became part of Chrysler.

A Karrier 'Bantam' refuse collection lorry - very popular with local authorities all over the country.

can i have the car behind it please.  :)

I get many mk2 Jaguars in my place of work, for a car of that era I find them quite nice to drive and being 21 I am used to most modern cars, we get some mint examples come into my place including the Daimler V8 version, though the 2.4 version was a little underpowered for the road.

Tilt-cabbed, the Dodge 'Commando' range was straightforward to work on and a worthy contender to the contemporary Bedford TK and Ford D-series.
IIRC; the very late models were badged as Renaults.

+1, and I remember when they undertook home deliveries before just serving retail premises once Corona's business had expanded. :y :y :y

In Kent R.Whites lemonade was very popular in the 1950's and 1960's, with these lorries being seen by me in Highbrooms delivering to the local grocer in about 1958:

Of course before all the wonderful lorries in this thread, steam lorries ruled.

These were the lorries my fathers generation saw, and spoke about to me, of the 1920/30's:

A small selection, but I have no idea of the names or technical details of these as I do not study this form of transport usually! ::) ::) ::) ::) :-[

I'm envious Red Baron! :D :D  With the crash box did you have to double-de-clutch?

I believe my late father-in-law drove those in the army during WW2, and he used to tell me about the crash gear boxes.  When I drove his Humber Hawk I remember always double-de-clutching  as there was no synchromesh.  It was a great skill to learn and I have used it on some old cars, including a Bull Nose Morris. :y

We used to have our winches at the gliding club mounted on a couple of old ex-army 4wd MKs. I wouldn't fancy going that fast in one of those.  :o  Needed to be a gorilla to turn the steering wheel. ;D

Wasn't much that would stop them in L4, though, including a Leyland National with no air and the brakes locked up when it had to be shifted from the runway pronto. ;D

Still, at least they stayed put when you launched a glider. ;D

It's a 1939 Leyland Lynx, powered by Leyland's 'Light 6' 4.7-litre indirect injection diesel unit.

New to the War Dept in 1939, an incredibly long working life finally saw it withdrawn from service in 1966!

Bought in a semi-derelict state way back in 1974, this has been a true 'ground up' labour of love and is believed to be the only oil-engined Lynx in a roadworthy condition in the UK.

Just needs the sign-writing sorting now ...  :y :y :y

A recent chat in the Mess Room with a colleague (and [very] good friend) centred around our childhoods, and respective interests in transport scene.

Jim's a good egg and a native of Porthcawl.
The seaside resort's Trecco Bay was the largest caravan park in Europe, and it was his late father who must've transported most of them there. Jim reckons that he rarely saw his workaholic dad, who often completed a round trip to Hull and back within 24 hours - no tachos in 'em days!

Here's his proud late father with a brand new Thames Trader chassis cab straight out of the box:

My late Dad bought his first lorry, a ,65 Leyland with the curved fibreglass cab. Traded that for a ,68 Dodge. Then he went articulated with a ,70 Guy Big J4 before then getting with it and buying a brand new Scania 80 in ,74. Things went down hill after two years and he then drove a mates ,74 AEC Mandator unit doing DFDS trailers. His mate had a MAN unit but the Mandator eat it alive on the hills even with a single speed axle and 6 speed crash box. He then bought a ,78 Seddon before working for someone else again finally using a 6x2 F12 Volvo before retiring at 69
No pics of any of them at all though

This splendid Leyland 'Super Comet' tipper has been owned from new by Mr Edwards.

It spent it's entire working life hauling aggregates out of the Mendip quarries, and upon retirement he retained it for attending such events. Being a 1969 model, it's plated for 16 tons GVW; is powered by the Leyland O.400 'Power Plus' engine and is a regular attendee at Welland.

Spiers of Melksham ran a substantial number of AEC Mandators for some years.

225 BHP 12.47 litre AV760 engine driving thro' an indestructable AEC 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. 6th gear being a mechanical overdrive.
Ergomatic tilt cab, which was used on contemporary AEC, Albion and Leyland trucks.

Mandator was the 32 tonner, whilst the AV505-powered Mercury was plated at 16 tons GVW.

Mandator was the 32 tonner, whilst the AV505-powered Mercury was plated at 16 tons GVW.

 ;) ;)

With the AV505 lump it was a 'Marshal' and when AV760-powered it was a 'Marshall Major'

The 'Mammoth Major' was AEC's 8-legger model:
