Title: Xbox, Wii, PS2/3 whatever?
Post by: bootie on 17 February 2012, 17:29:24
Seeing as some of the members have these bits of equipment I was wondering if they would be able to give me the benefit of their experience.
I have never, and I mean never, had a gaming console of any kind ever.... always too busy doing things to stop and do things if you know what I mean.

We have bought a new telly and want to get the best from it including a something. I have seen adverts for all but am totally undecided as to the merits or shortcomings of each piece of equipment.
I would like it for, sorry, we would like it for things like 'Zumba' for SWMBO and a sport package thing for moi, where you are interactive with it to work up a sweat sort of thing.

I've heard some of the activities can be quite mirth making when attempted for the first few times and can go down quite well when entertaining guests for dinner (if they were so inclined)

Now that we have the house finished to a nice standard we are beginning to invite people over. Previously we were always going to 'theirs' and now have the chance to pay them back for their hospitality!

Discuss??

If your not a 'gamer' id say start off with the wii, its easy to use and fun for lots of silly games, xbox has kinect which is also good, but lots more money, i dont think the ps3 wande thing is much cop from what ive heard. I do have all 3 consoles  :y

Xbox - Most popular "just for games" - Great if its just you using it, shooting people, driving, running around causing trouble. Stunning graphics, that are very impressive in things like Battlefield 3 I also use mine for streaming SkyGo films/tv.

Wii - The family console, much, much better for games to play with a group. Mario Kart prime example. Graphics crap. But game play excellent.

PS3 - Only really worth it for the blueray player, more expensive than xbox, I also personally find the controllers rubbish!

Ive always had ps's, but the xbox really is a lot easier to get to grips with it is bloody noisey tho lol and one thing i notice after blasting forza then going on GT is how bad the ps3 controler feels in comparison. dont know what the price differance is between the big two these days, but you have to add the kinect into the bundle, that sounds like what the mrs is after.

Tbh, from your "wants" list I would say the Wii fits best. Certainly value wise :-\

The Mario Olympics series get the blood pumping, as does the boxing and tennis on Wii Sports when you get to the higher levels :y

The great thing with the Wii is that it's easy to pick up and put down :y and watching SWMBO doing Zumba is quite amusing :-X ::)

But, as said, the graphics are rather basic.

having owned the Wii and now an X box with connect ,personnally i would go for xbox with kinect

alot easier to use than wii,...everything done with just hand or voice...and graphics/games are ALOT better than wii

not a hard gamer by any means but certainly find the xbox alot better :y

Well that's narrowed it down to the two (as I thought it would)
I'llleave this running a little longer and see how it goes. I am leaning in favour of the Wii.... but that's down to the comment from LD.  ;D  :o

Me, Im a ludite who used to struggle big time with the old PS1 trying to play "Tomb Raider" or "Aliens"  ;D-but our youngest has a PS2 (given to him cheap by a friend who upgraded to a PS3), a Wii (which he won in a competition!!) and an Xbox360 (given to him cheap by his older brother who opted for a PS3). My recommendation is that if you are a serious gamer then a PS3 is the way to go (least ways all the guys I know who are into this sort of thing all use PS3), the Wii is fun but the Xbox is our lads favourite. He hasnt got the Konnect thing but he can play online (with strict supervision!) and, of course, you can play dvds in Hd . Also consider who is going to use the console and what range of games are available. For eg the Xbox probably has a greater range of kids games than the PS3, as does the Wii. Certainly the Xbox is easy to use and this is the console that tends to remain "set up". Hope this helps!

Well we dont 'do' games really, closest I get is 'bubbles' on SWMBO iPad!!!!

Looking more and more like the Wii. I have until the 7th March to decide so a few guarded questions back home I think.
See which way the land lies.

Thanks for all the info, so far.

i have all 3 consoles ps3, xbox 250gig with kinect and the wii, all i will say is that the xbox and ps3 get used for serious gaming online etc the kinect games for the xbox really are not that good at the moment (but will get better)  so if you are not a gamer then the wii is for you will give you excellent fun and work up a sweat if you want it to  :y

the newer xboxes i.e the 250 gig which you can buy with kinect are whisper quiet   :y

gayStation doesn't really fit your needs at all - Fony Move is just shite.

Wii seems to fit your needs perfectly, but is now a dead end console with little titles being developed. A new Nintendo console due out soon, assuming Nintendo survive the massive losses they are expected to anounce.  But if the existing games work for you, go for it :y

seXBOX 360, also due to be replaced soon, when added to the Kinect add-on, also perfectly fits your requirements. seXBOX lacks as many 'fun' titles compared to Wii, but those Kinect 'fun' games are all very good.  Kinect, however, does need quite a lot of room, and even more for 2 player. A typical 'newbuild' 3 bed semi probably isn't going to have enough room, depending where your furniture is.

I personally find the seXBOX/Kinect setup more energetic than the Wii setup, as you can soon learn to fool the system with the Wii - I'm really good at the running games, whilst laying on the sofa ::).  Kinect is a camera based system that actually tracks you, so not found any scope for 'cheating' ;D

Another consideration is that Wii is about £130 in UK, seXBOX/Kinect bundle is about £250 in UK (for 4Gb model).

I won't bother explaining about capabilities etc, as I guess you're not too bothered with graphics and sound capabilities, as you are looking more for the quick 'fun' type games, rather than the true 'gamer' (immerse yourself for days in other worlds, just to learn how to play) type games.

It works by tracking your body heat, the main target points being hands, face, & feet  ;)

The 4GB bundle is down to £200, and the 250GB bundle is £250.

@Bootie,

Jaime has pretty much covered it, and after having all 3 I'd say the Xbox is the winner IMHO.

Yup IR camera (and normal camera), you can see the tracking mechanism in the dashboard :y

Now to tape 5 laser pointers together in a 5 pointed star shape, lay back, and relax while you practice the Wii "flick of the wrist"  ;D ;D

Something similar had crossed my mind, but probably less effort to actually play properly ;D

Although not sure entirely how the player recognition works, assume thats a role for the normal camera?

I'm not so sure it does recognise the player "per se".
Our Kinect has only been calibrated by the missus for herself, if her friend steps up then all it does is go through a "quick" (couple of seconds) recalibration process and then you play as normal. Based on that (and the Kinect telling you where to stand) I'd hazard a guess that the IR camera is actually taking in to account the distance between the target heat sources in order to recognise a different player?

If I'm playing, and Mrs TB walks across the room to do something, it pops up "<Mrs TB's Gamertag> has joined the game". Also, the seXbox logs in as me automatically, but starting a Kinect game, if she is playing, it knows its her...

I've just Googled it and it turns out the Kinect uses both cameras for facial recognition.
It uses the normal colour camera for the basics of facial recognition, and it uses the IR camera to measure the three dimensional shape of your face......that's pretty impressive IMO and top marks to MS for it  :y

PS3, imho is by far the best console atm...  it also has the added benefit of psn (which is free), opening up the multiplay options of games with no further hidden charges (except game addons)...

The Wii does have a number of good games available for it, but also many that are very gimicky...

A lot of reading, thanks for the inputs. Maybe I should have started a poll.

Keep the comments coming, I have still to decide.
