Title: Drops of water on my drive?
Post by: PAULCDX on 17 February 2012, 21:09:32
Hi Guys,

Just after some advice please, have noticed the last few days a small pool of water on my drive after I've parked the car up..... On looking under the car I can see small drops coming from the central area at the back of the engine in line with the middle of the dashboard if that makes sense??

I can see the drops coming from under the car even with the engine turned off........ So I'm guessing it must be dripping whilst I'm also driving the car?

I've checked the coolant level and it seems fine with no apparent or noticeable loss........

Any ideas guys or is it nothing to worry about?

Thanks as always

Paul  :y

If coolant level is OK, then it could well be the aircon. Do the drips smell of antifreeze / look pink?

If the drops are totally clear with no smell, and coolant level isn't dropping, I'd hazard a guess it's the aircon dripping, which is normal, and depending on ambient temp, may drip for a short while after the engine is turned off....

Do a test for me.... turn your climate control totally off...... and run it up for a bit, let us know if still dripping?

Is it coolant? Ie same colour and taste/smell as what's in the coolant bottle?

If not, ac drains, or blocked scuttle drain dripping...?

Hi Chris,

It seems to be just a clear water colour with no smell at all so I'm guessing its not my coolant...... At the mo my coolant is blue and was topped up at the weekend... Level has stayed same all week so I don't think I'm losing any.....

Thanks  :y

How many miles since stat change, mate?

When we do the full service, we'll have to flush that rubbish out for some nice VX red :D

Keep us posted... I'd have thought if it was the stat, and you can see visible drips even with engine off, you'd have had SOME dropping of level in the coolant bottle

Am still thinking air-con. Is it really quite far back, near the exhausts?

Thinking about this, it couldn't be condenstaion from where the cats join up with the mid sections, could it? if not absolutely, 100% gas tight, these joints will drip too....

As Chrisgixer says could well be the scuttle drian dripping worth a check just to make sure its not blocked anyway  :y

Yep :y

I'm pretty happy it won't be the stat (although never say never!) - but either way, it'll only cost you a cuppa tea to have it checked over :y

James would the aircon even be working enough to get that cold as its pretty cold out still ,I know I have read somewhere that the aircon wont kick in below a certian outside temp ?

Been warm enough around here for the AC to be working and the drips are where the AC Condensation drips... That's what my 2p is on ;)

Hi James,

Update -

I've had the car running without the climate / air con on and I couldn't see any drips of water, turn it on and yes it starts dripping again mate?

What does this mean?

Went on a run earlier and engine was at normal temp etc, checked underneath and couldn't see any dripping.........

It means it's totally normal.... it's just drips from the aircon drains, which is what they're designed for :) :y
