Title: Anyone with a 2.5 TD?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 17 February 2012, 22:14:18
Hi Guys,

I am seriously considering the purchase of a manual 2.5 TD Omega.

Apart from a drive many moons ago in TB's tractor (auto) - I've never driven one, and I'd like to have a go in one, to see if I'm doing the right thing!

Anyone have one they'd be happy to let me have an accompanied go in, obviously upon providing confirmation of insurance and licence (and fuel replenishment!)

Just want to make sure I'm not going to be totally disappointed after a V6!

:y

My old 2.5TD was the same when I bought it - must be a common mistake :)

JamesV6 - ensure you get a manual.

The price of diesel, an auto is too uneconomical IMHO.  Even chipped (which done right, increases MPG (but breaks up MID MPG readings)), given the extra oil a tractor uses (6.5l) and 3k oil changes is the utter maximum, I reckon it (my auto tractor) wasn't far off the running cost of my MV6.

I loved my tractor though, esp chipped. Great fun. Remember, if you can't handle a big RWD car (no offence, but recall your laid back style), it has no TC, and (chipped) its ever so easy to powerslide it. Yes, you can powerslide a Omega Tractor Auto - I wouldn't want to see a post that it had caught you out, and no electronics to save you.

Obviously, unchipped, its about 100bhp down on what you have. Chipped, its about 70bhp down. Its an old style diesel, so a good wide range of revs with good torque, probably (chipped) about 1800rpm to 4500rpm.  Oddly, for MPG, you may find a 50mph cruise is better by dropping a peg. I used to cruise my auto at 50mph in 3rd.  Additionally, the MID MPG reading (inaccurate, but a guide (reads about 15-20% over when chipped)) was double at 80mph than it was at 40mph! (I think due to the excessive torque converter slip until you hit lockup at 50mph that plagues all TD autos).

Oh, and a set of ZV3's (that you supplied ;)) are good for about 4k on the back of a chipped auto tractor ::)

....... its ever so easy to powerslide it.

While not quite in the same league, a DTi isn't to hard to get the tail out in when you are 'on the turbo'. Vastly better when you have decent tyres on it though!

The MID on my manual diesel would read almost 60mpg which I knew was way out because I didn't hang around and with the 10 chip I would say it was as quick as a 2.5 petrol. With cheap teflon non stick tyres on the back it would spin the rear tyres in the wet in 3rd gear which was fun when you got used to it ::)

No offence taken TB.....  ;)  My eleven years on the road (7 of which have been in V6 Miggys) is a drop in the ocean compared to you oldies  ;D :y

You're right, in that, I do generally drive very conservatively :) But I think even you'd have been impressed at my attempt at Chicken$hit canyon this evening  ;D :y

I've been down there, maxxed out in a reasonably high performance car at such a speed the bend looks tight...  ...the M3 driver was miffed ::)

Normally too busy to play on that stretch...
