Title: rocker covers????
Post by: will_v6_cdx on 18 February 2012, 08:04:23
i have changed rocker cover gaskets due to oil and smoke coming from under the bonnet

still seems to be leaking because i still seem to get an oil patch on my drive and smoke coming from the bonnet.
someone said to me when i was at work that you have to silicone them inplace otherwise they leak.

or put new rocker covers or buy metal ones from the vectra v6 engine. if i was to put metal ones on the oil filler cap will be relocated at the back on the opposite side?
is there a chance ive over tightened the rocker covers?.

Did you follow the Maintenance Guide on here?

You have to use genuine gaskets from a Vauxhall dealers and the black sealant they sell, you also have to clean the breather system and use a torque wrench set to 8nm ;)

Don't use silicone! That seems to be the answer some people give as a 'fix all' but just follow the guide, as that's the correct way  :y
Are you sure the oil leak on the ground is from the gaskets?

Have you checked the plug wells? If there is oil in them after the gasket change, presuming they were cleaned, then its maybe the gaskets again? Has the filter or oil been changed recently? Check for loose filter and sump nut just in case they're at fault. If these things are ok, and the drip isn't from previously leaked oil still lurking about the engine, then a closer look will be required.

thanks. ill check all at weekend. tgeres a silver pipe running infront of the cambelt cover round the drivers side of the engine and has a piece of rubber pipe on it. is that an oil feed pipe? one of the gaskets are leaking out of the half moon bits at the back. silly as i am i didnt use genuine rocker cover gaskets which i have bought now. will chance them using the guide on here to eliminate the rockers.

thanks to all.

The half moons are a bit of a nightmare to keep in place sometimes but this would certainly explain the oil on the drive I would have thought? Shame you have to do it again but it'll be worth it in the long run  :y

Make sure you clean the breathers and clear out the plug wells too :y

if i used decent parts in the first place i wouldnt havr to do it again. it proves that theres no point using cheap parts.

i checked the spark plug wells and theres no oil in them i check at the back theres oil leaking from the half moon bits i think. ill change them again and use genuine parts. might even buy new rocker covers aswell.

next on list is rear wheel bearing, front lower arms.

Shouldnt be any need for new rocker covers.Make sure you torque them down to 8nm and no more though. :y
