Title: Project Tractor has arrived!
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 20 February 2012, 23:52:30
Tonight I picked up project tractor.  :D

A project car, bought for project money. No idea what I'm going to do with it long term, but I've wanted to play with one for a while, and this came up at the right time and money.. so....

It's a mini facelift 1998 CDX, 2.5 Turbo Diesel BMW engine with a Slushbox - 120,000 miles on the clock.

Body wise - very tidy indeed. Interior, also extremely tidy and fresh. No rust at all.

Ride - beautiful, soft, comfy, decent handling.

Engine - well isn't that S6 lump bloody lovely!! It's definitely one of the best diesel engines of it's era. Starts on the button, sounds gorgeous, and offers effortless amounts of power. Temp totally stable, no pressuring or other nasties..

The issues? I have driven around 70 miles home in the old bus, and can report they are as follows.

1) The brakes need looking at. Pressing the pedal moderately doesn't have anything like the affect I would like. I would imaging checking discs/pads, replacing if needed, and a full fuild change will be the first port of call...

2) The handbrake is totally unservicable, and does nothing.

3) Although the engine is as sweet as a peach, under acceleration when the turbo is spinning, there is a 'whoosh' noise from the engine bay. Suspecting a small split in intercooler pipework or similar, and will check in daylight.

4) It's a slushbox tractor with an AR25 and 120 odd thousand on the clock. Need I say more? In all seriousness, there is an issue with the auto box, but, I'm not sure it's a serious one. In fact, I don't think I would have even noticed it, had the chap not been decent enough to tell me how to provoke it! Basically, if you brake VERY firmly, and then immediately try and set off from a standing start - it dis-engages the drive for a couple of seconds..  that's it. Otherwise the gearbox is perfect through all the gears...

Example... if you brake hard, and try and start off straight away, the drive won't be there for a couple of seconds, and it will slip a little before regaining drive. Or - if you brake hard to a standstill, and then stay stationary in 'D' - after several seconds, you'll feel the drive come back, as if you've just dropped it into 'D' from 'N'.

I'm wondering if it's just low fluid, and perhaps the braking movement is moving fluid around is enough to disconnect the drive for a few seconds?? Certainly worth a level check in the first instance, before condeming the box, IMHO??

5) The bootlid has had a disagreement with a post. Minor inconvenience!!

Thinking about it - the hard brake pedal is more likely to be vaccum related....!

Good check of that is in order, tomorrow! :y

Gearbox problem could well be low fluid, had an automatic sharan recently that would lose drive when cornering hard, that  turned out to be low fluid and box had just been serviced by a "specialist" :(

Vacuum for the servo is driven by a tiny pump on the rear of the engine on a DTi, not sure how the TD generates the vacuum.

Ay my mig was doing the same until I topped up the fluid the other evening...

Even if it is just low fluid, surely that means there's a potential leak that needs investigating..  :-\

vac pump is right at he front of the lump, im betting the vacuum hoses under the black platic cover, the connection is broken so you have a vac leak!! seen it hundreds of times now!!

I didn't have much free time tonight, but I did manage to just pop her up in the air and check the Autobox fluid level.

All in all, on a level surface, I got just over 2 litres of nice new ATF in there. So it was two litres down.

A quick run around the block twice demonstrates that, initially, the issue with it dropping out of drive after braking appears to be resolved.

Pickup is now instant, and the box drives absolutely spot on. I'm doing a bit of ferrying tonight, and will use the TD - and report back fully tonight.

Hopefully, though, that's one issue down!

As Omegatoy says, vac pump bolted to front of camshaft, and the big vac pipe often breaks.

The thing is as flat as a witches tit until chipped, which will finish off the gearbox. Shove a manual in it, TD + auto isn't satisfactory IMHO.

Where does the big pipe generally break... have had an initial look, and all looks OK...

Yep, plan is AR35. Where can I get her chipped? Does a chip make a big difference / noticible?

Also - what's the preferred option with the viscous fan on these... leave them in place, or ditch in favour of an electric one..?

And... I've only had a quick look in darkness, but do you REALLY have to take the lower tray off, to get to the engine sump drain bolt?  ::)

in my experience, its not the big pipe that breaks although it can do, its the connector in the middle of it that has 2 vac pipe take offs, ham fisted people often break these without knowing iot!! vac leak is small but insistent and you ususally only get 2 or 3 goes at the pedal before the vac is exhausted!!, and no you dont have to take the undertray off, should be a removeable plate in the middle just under the sump bolt!!

As OT says, where the 1 way valve is.

Yes, undertray off for coolant drain... ...thats why my undertray is still in loft of my garage ::)

Viscous off, works the I/C fan harder, keeping it free.

Don't piss around with AR35, put a manual on it. As much as I hate the Omega manual, and as much as I like the Omega Auto, the TD just isn't suited to it.

My Omega (boohoo) has just gone to the Spanish recycler. I received the princely sum of 100 euros for it less all the parts I could remove. It had a lovely new low mileage AR35 that was put in only a few years ago. I did explain this to the guy behind the counter but I guess by now it is an ingot.......

manual it is.........

mmmmm that won't be true for long with your record !!!

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So .. the autobox from this one to the 3.2, manual box into this one ???  Best of both worlds ??? then find an AR35 and put that in the 3.2 at leisure .. :)

Youll still be ribbing me when you're old and grey, won't you Nige? Oh, hang on a minute...  :P :D :y

In all seriousness, I'm not going to faff around putting an AR25 on the MV6. It will eat it for breakfast  ::) :y
