Just recently, on startup, I get the smell of petrol, and the engine does not seem to run smooth. only lasts for a very short while. Would something be blocked ;)
Went from Brackley to West Midlands Safari on sunday....run like a dream......but after I stopped when we got there, went for a wee, then restarted the car, it stank of petrol and ran like it was only on about four pots. I gave it throttle and it cleared itself. Been ok till today, when again on starting it smelt of petrol for a short while.
TIA for any diagnosis :y

Have you cleaned the breathers in situ? There's a purge valve in one of the hoses that go in to the breather box. It allows fumes from the carbon canistor in the o/s front wheel arch to be burnt off by the engine.
It doesn't take kindly to being filled with carb cleaner :-[. Readily available new from VX, a bit fiddly to fit, but mounts to the same bracket as the HBV :y

Sounds to me like it's misfiring, so plugs, leads, coil pack and cam covers would be worth a check.
Any recent work or has it just started doing this on its' own?
Might be worth reading the codes but if it's an ignition issue there probably won't be any. Making sure the live data is plausible would be worthwhile, just in case it's a coolant temperature sensor or something.
-
Cam covers have been replaced, did replace plugs at the time. does not lose coolant.
No really recent work done, it just started. As its an intermittent fault, I bet it will be hard to find.
Will check your suggestions, fellas, as much as my limited knowledge allows. :y
PS...Swmbo just gone out in it....perfect start, no smells at all....runs sweet :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Might be a dodgy plug lead prone to getting damp overnight but OK once warm?
-
Yes Kevin....I thought damp, as it did do the same when we had the snow, and it was not used for a few days....but........after driving to Kidderminster from Brackley without any misfires etc, etc.....car was well hot, but after switching off for about ten minutes, on restart, we had petrol smell, lumpy till I hit the throttle, then perfect again. Baffling :( :(
Once it has started, if it plays up, it lasts only till I hit throttle, then the car is perfect. Just on occasions on a restart does it play up. Once, and only once, I got to the end of our road before all cylinders kicked in, then as before, went like a dream!!!!!!!!!!! :y

Any sign of a misfire under heavy load at low to medium revs?
-
Sorry delay....
No mate....runs a dream all the time....its just this start up thing :( If I hit the throttle on the motorway, there is no hesitation at all....goes off like a rocket

I have a free day tomorrow, so I'll do some checks and running tests and report back... :y
Maybe I can come up with some better details for you

one of my sennies used to do this , turned out to need new rubber sections on the injector supply rail.... no idea if this relevant to miggys though....
-
Could be a weeping injector that floods one of the pots when stood.
Try cranking with your foot on the floor for a few seconds before starting normally and see if it's any better - "flood clear" mode.

Thanks Kevin....
It ran ok today.....with possibly a very very small up and down in revs for a few moments after starting. Soon cleared.... :y
