Title: Flushing Coolant System
Post by: Colin G on 24 February 2012, 11:55:23
Hi Gents

I'm just about to embark on replacing my oil cooler and know I've got the job over flushing the coolant system which I think will be pretty gungded up.  I read on the How To to flush with Road Film remover.  Am I right in thinking that I can put this in and run the engine to circulate and then drain down. Repeat until the water runs clear before doing the final refil or am I missing something.  I've ordered some concentrated film remover - one presumes I need to dilute this before I put it in the coolant system?

Soory if this is a daft question, just want to make sure I get the system as clean as I can.

Cheers

Col

Might be worth spending a half hour reading this thread Colin...

Tells the story of another member that has very recently carried out the work you are now embarking on.  :y

Just another daft question, is there anything to be gained by doing a preliminary flush before stripping everything down to save dragging so much crap through the new oil cooler? I know I'll still have to flush before the final fill with antifreeze mix.

While it's all stripped down, I'm going to do the following:-

cam cover gaskets
thermostat
HBV
Breather system

did plugs last year and only done <6k so won't do them this time.

Anything else I might as well do while I'm at it?

Cheers

That depends on how bad the leak is on the oil cooler. Chances are that the oil cooler will be leaking oil into the coolant system faster than you can flush it away :(

The radiator and the heater matrix seem to be where a lot of oil builds up. If you flush / backflush the heater matrix several times that should help. Taking the radiator out of the car and getting that clean would be my priority. The oil in the radiator probably won't shift until it gets properly hot so I would flush with hot water if at all possible.

OK, started stripping down, took the trumpets out and there seemed to be quite a bit of water in them that I tipped out, don't remeber there being any when I last had the plenum off.  Is this a bi product of the fact the oil cooler is buggered?
