Title: Drop links
Post by: omega3000 on 25 February 2012, 14:26:18
Whats the purpose of the drop links , i have tyre wear on both outside edges of the front tyres ...Also the usual clunk over speed bumps and pot holes so im going to replace the drop links and see if that cures the clunking . Will fitting the new drop links cure any tyre wear or is that a different problem to look at  ;)

Hmmm, I thought the droplinks transferred the "stiffness" of the anti-roll bar to the rest of the suspension. I hope someone will clarify. This stops the car wallowing in corners. The clunking is probably droplinks, but the tyre wear sounds like camber. Have you checked it?

Near enough. When you turn left the car will naturally lean to the right, so the right side link pushes down on the end of the antirollbar, this downforce is transferred through the antirollbar which then pushes down on the left hand side to keep the car from rolling to far, turn right and you get the opposite

That would be why the car seems to wallow and roll too much , I noticed the front wishbones have been replaced and thinking they never bothered having the tracking done afterwards  ::)

Drop link wear has no affect on handling or tyre wear. They just knock, the slightest play will be heard through the chassis.

Jack BOTH sides of the car onto stands, to unload the roll bar. Then wiggle the roll bar by the bottom drop link ball joint. You'll feel any play there.

Tyre wear will be a set up issue, if there are no faults or play elsewhere. While the car is jacked is a good time to check all other joints, most of which also knock in one way or another. :)

Ps, excess roll sounds like a shock issue. Are they original?

Although Elites are very soft and do roll about in a ponderous manor.

Its not excessive roll , i did replace the anti-roll bar bushes a month back thinking it was them that were causing the knock ... on an old carlton i had it was making the same knocking noises so i changed the roll bar bushes and it stopped all the knocking . Not so on the mig as the knocking is still there so will replace the drop links and see how it goes . ;)

you have to remove suspension leg-compress spring to do it pretty straight forward if you need to do the job yaself scratch markings on knukle where it joins leg as that is your camber setting-you will see 2 nuts n bolt going thru it-its behind brake disc-easy when you see it mate. :y

See preserve camber guide, or, leave the strut attached to the stub axle, but remove the stub axle and shock together from the car. More fiddely and will need set up anyway.

Just some suggestions. ;)
