Omega General Help / Alternator?
« on: 14 August 2012, 18:00:56 »
Not sure if anyone can help but started out with a problem Monday whereby engine wouldn't turn (problem was that I was 80 miles from home!) - suspected knackered battery. Started with a booster pack and away I went. After 20 miles or so I noticed that engine was idleing at 800 rpm rather than 400 rpm and when the fan was about to cut in, all lights on dash would come on as if it was cutting out and then immediately come back on again - at this point also noticed that the fan didn't cut it where it should have.

Next thing I noticed was that I couldn't even charge a phone through the cigarette lighter! I pulled over, switched off ignition and then nothing! I phoned the AA and as suspected they diagnosed a knackered battery and sold me one for £106 on the spot! Started up and away I went, 30 miles later and exactly the same problems were happening, including flickering random lights on dash when fan was due to cut in, inability to charge phone, very slow windscreen wipers, high idleing speed etc. Limped home, switched off, and wouldn't turn over again (bearing in mind a brand new battery had been fitted 50 miles ago!). Phoned them back up, they came out and now diagnosed a faulty alternator - charging at approx 12.2V. Could a reading of this level indicate a knackered alternator - bearing in mind it couldn't even power a phone. While I understand I should be looking at about 14V, could 12.2V indicate all of the lack of electricity in the car!

Many thanks as always.

Feels ok to drive, although only done about 5 miles since fault showed up and certainly haven't open the taps to see if performance has been affected. Although it does rev a lot higher on first start up, and possibly a bit more lumpy.

To be fair, I only phoned them today and they seem very willing to look at it tomorrow. Therefore it hasn't hit Tech2 or anything yet.  Thanks loads to everyone for the advice (as always), it certainly gives me something to use should they try to charge me.

Is there a fair chance that Vauxhall could have caused this when replacing the cambelt yesterday?

Well, I've just learnt the pedal trick, told you I was 'green'!

Codes are 10 1 7 10      and 10 1 7 3

It's definitely emissions light. Went to Bridge Vauxhall, Stratford-upon-Avon. Like I say, they're having it back tomorrow, just could do with some firepower to throw should they try to fob me off (had trouble with Vauxhall Dealerships before, I try to avoid them at all costs).

Sorry if this all sounds a bit 'green', however........... Had a cambelt kit change yesterday on 2.6 MV6 (sorry but had to go to Vauxhall (who charged £430 for the privilege)! - no trustworthy independant in local area would do it!). After a couple of miles of getting it back, the exhaust emission light has come on.

The main difference I've noticed is that when first started, the engine revs to about 1.5k rpm and stays for about two seconds before falling down to idle speed. (this didn't ever happen before it went in to Vauxhall, it never revved to more than 1k even when stone cold). The said it was a 'tooth' out but they say this is sorted now.

The exhaust is smoking/steaming, although this has been happening for a few weeks now, although any problems prior to the cambelt changed relating to this had been ruled out by Vauxhall as they carried out a block test and are certain that it is just condensation.

Spent nearly £1k on it this year and it's starting to run me down now!!! I'm taking it back to them tomorrow, can anyone give me any idea as to what they may have done when changing the cambelt? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, don't fancy forking out any more cash if this is their error. Low mileage too only 78k.

As always, many thanks.

Funny you should say that because I did hear a bit of a gurgling sound when I went round the back of it yesterday. However, this did only seem to be on first start up. Will check this out in a bit more depth tomorrow. Thanks for the help. Will try to sort out some video too.

No, don't seem to be. It's very odd because it's really 'chugging' it out even when red hot. No performance loss though either. It's due a cam belt change too, and I obviously don't want to be forking out for that, if there are deeper problems...will have to get this checked out first...like I say, I only started to notice it after service and crankshaft sensor replacement.

Thanks for the reasurrance, I'm sure it's probably me being paranoid. It's just odd that I haven't had it to this extent before (owned 3 over a period of 12 years). Cheers for the advice.

If someone could point me in the right direction it would be hugely aprpeciated....Have recently had a full service and the crankshaft sensor replaced on my 2001 2.6 MV6. It may be purely coincidental, but shortly after I got it back, it is producing alot of white smoke/steam, most noticeably at running temp on tickover (it's constant). I don't seem to have lost any fluids and performance is not affected. Any ideas? Many thanks.
