Omega General Help / Re: Spark plug access: Ecotec 2.2L
« on: 24 September 2007, 17:40:48 »
size=12]There is a plastic cover on the top of the cam cover, unplug the wiring plug on the coil pack at the bulk head end, then you push the plastic cover towards the rear of the car. You may just have to ease the ends up at the same time and lift it up and off. When this is off the coil pack is there held down by two Torque  bolts undo these,  ease the pack upwards and off . Bingo the spark plugs are there inside  deep recesses, if any are filled with oil this is normally the cam cover gasket gone. If so buy a genuine Vauxhall gasket and O rings and you may as well change it while you are examining your plugs . Cheers bash

In reply to how to get stud out when snapped inside hole. I have just had the exact same problem when i found the noise coming from around that area . Plus then found manifold cracked plus another two bolts sheared. I managed to extract all the studs except the front one the real  --------- . I tried every thing cobalt drills , snap on drills, even bought a right angled air drill. And before i started MiG welded a jig onto the old manifold to be sure i kept drilling central. After 6 hrs not a dent on the old stud, i was reluctant after spending £200 on parts to put it all together again and still have it blowing. So i made a bracket about 6" long out off 1" X 1/4 " bar this has a hole drilled in it and it is attached to i think its a tapped hole for a engine mount just below the manifold and approx 4" back from the stud hole. One end of the bar is placed onto where the stud should be and when you tighten the nut this puts pressure against the manifold where the stud is missing. ( To be honest this is how lots of classic car manifolds are attached )  i torqued everything down in stages and have had no trouble since. Regarding the anti seize compound on both the nuts and studs, if you get genuine vauxhall ones they are copper coloured and the studs have female torque ends as they are a tight fit screwing them into the head. Hope this is of help cheers bash

Omega General Help / Re: autobox issue
« on: 15 September 2007, 23:37:08 »
Many thanks for the info , i will watch and see how it behaves in the next few days driving steady for a day then giving it some boot, will admit hardly ever put it into sports mode. Re- soft ware up grade is this an upgrade you buy and have fitted , or can my gearbox centre re programme the box using the most recent diagnostic equipment.

Cheers for the reply, i agree about the smoothness of the engine, i may be harsh comparing a 4 cylinder to a six, but i still think even compared to other manufacturers 4 cylinder engine's. The  Omega 2.2 litre is not as smooth or as quite . As for the fluid change, this was done with a filter change when i had the gearbox service done and the gearbox diagnostic check only a couple of weeks ago. The place that did the gearbox diagnostic check and service is classed as the best place for gearbox's in my area. It repairs and rebuilds  all the luxury ,and top of the range sports cars with all the most up to date diagnostics's available it even does the main dealer's gearbox problem's for them. Also the chap who does the engine diagnostics runs a rolling road tuning place . Sets up Rally and Track car's plus super car's, and as he says . The equipment has not shown any faults in the last ( i cannot remember) but so many starts, and he has even gone through the check with me showing the throttle position, drive by wire and all other parameters working just as they should. I will admit it is far better now the manifold and diss pack has been done. BUT from what i have read on the forum the gearbox has been a pain from day one in the Omega. RE- the 2,2 engine not a lot is posted on it, this is why i have asked for others with the same engine to comment Regards bash
PS i am not complaining about the smoothness of the gear change, it is just it seems to have a mind of its own on hills . Plus unlike other auto box's it does not seem to have set rev ranges for gear changes plus it is super sensitive to how much throttle you use, re one reply i cannot get my box to not change before red line, even when i have the peddle to the floor

It must be catching this gearbox problem. I have just bought an Omega  2.2 CD 2002 petrol. And i have just spent a fortune trying to get it to run spot on. Re- gearbox i have had the same issues ,in a morning hangs on before changing up gears, paid for full gearbox service then i was told this is normal for this cars gearbox. Also sometimes if stuck in traffic, when i pull away  it sometimes wont change up until about 3000rpm then is fine again, although i have found it all depends where you have the throttle positioned. I have  had the car on diagnostic machine for gearbox check every thing is OK they say. Also on hills it cannot make up its mind what gear it wants to be in
Plus can i ask if other 2.2 omega owners feel the same as myself, that they are let down by the tick over, it is not very smooth, plus the engine sounds agricultural for a top of the range luxury saloon. I have spent hundred's trying to sort this car out. New exhaust manifold (cracked) new diss pack and cam cover gasket's plus plugs. Cleaned every breather pipe out plus can eat your dinner off the throttle body. Again it has been on diagnostic machine for the engine this time, again  every thing is coming up as OK. I have owned other luxury cars or cars that cost the same as these when new, and it is not a patch on the Jaguar, BMW, or even the Maxima i have owned. It is a shame really as i will admit on the motorway it runs spot on, and the handling is excellent, So is the ride and comfort. It is just a pity its let down by the idle and the gearbox problems, regards bash

Omega General Help / Re: omega 2.2 idle problem
« on: 12 September 2007, 23:50:46 »
I have had the same problem as : bubble1973-and did every thing that has been suggested, even replaced the exhaust manifold & EGR valve but like : bubble1973 says it idles just not quite right. Also he is right about the valve he is talking about mine is a drive by wire and has the exact same valve, a pipe comes off the throttle body at the base towards the  (front) of the engine, goes to this valve, i don't know what its correct name is also . But like : bubble1973 have done the same thing and my car idled better. Could you let me know how you get on when you have installed yours please : bubble1973. I agree with you i have only had my 2.2 litre CD 2002 for a few weeks and the idle problem is the only thing that lets it down,. And believe me i have done every thing, plugs new dis pack , manifold, EGR valve, rocker gasket, cleaned breathers out ,throttle body out ,new gaskets.  Had it on snap on diagnostic three times showing no faults and none in memory. cheers bash

Omega General Help / Re: Rougth Idle
« on: 30 August 2007, 22:58:44 »
What a night mare, I found my exhaust manifold cracked when i took the stainless cover off. But the worse part both front studs snapped.  (Okay all you members who said cracked manifold in the first place ). After about 4 hrs we got the end top stud out but the very end one not a hope. Snapped 1/8 in the head at an angle ,tried making a jig to keep the drill central welded to the old manifold. Bought the best drills plus a 90% drill attachment could not touch it. In the end all new studs, nuts gaskets, plus brand new exhaust manifold £120 worth and what we did out of heavy duty bar made a clamp that bolted onto the tapped hole just under the manifold then the end of the bar posotioned where the stud should be and when tightened put's pressure on the manifold. Just like the old style manifold clamps, Touch wood no exhaust blow or tapping on start up plus the car idles a lot more smoothly. But i will say they are not the most refined engine still sounds a bit agricultural to Jags i have owned. But the mechanic at Perry's said they called the 4 pots tractors compared to the 6's. Will do the EGR still but another day had enougth today. Does any one know how the EGR valves  work on the 2.2 petrol does the pressure go through the head or the manifold to it. Cheers to every one for the advice, will have my fingers crossed tomorrow on start up Regards bash IE (Tony )

Omega General Help / Re: Rougth Idle
« on: 22 August 2007, 21:44:13 »
Cheers every one,

Re- cleaning the throttle body ( YES ) i did it as stated in this Forum, everything was like new , and i did clean out the small hole,  and i did buy both gaskets one for the throttle body and one for the breather pipe to the block, plus a new small breather pipe.  I really cleaned the rocker cover inside also as i had it off to change the gasket.

Re- Fuel and Air filters both were changed as soon as i got the car, i know i sound like i am a clever so and so but i always put injection cleaner in the first full tank of any new  car i buy. When i buy a car for myself, I go for a test run,  a decent journey to find any faults out, On this car really only the idle was a problem. I then do a full service,  on this car the only thing that i didn't need to do was the timing belt as this and the water pump was changed less than 5000 miles ago.

Re- the EGR valve i have not cleaned this out, do i need any gaskets and do you have to take it apart. I do know it was cleaned out about a year ago as the previous owner is a close friend and when we were talking about the idle said he had his garage clean it out, he says it has always idled like it is now, he also said he tried all the things i have done apart from fitting a new coil pack. And it idled no better so he just put up with it.

I am wondering if the fuel mixture could be to weak, or something like this, when i take the plugs out they are more white than tan colour. can the mixture be altered on the 2.2 litre model. thanks for all your suggestions, this is the first Omega i have owned and the idle is the only thing that is letting the car down as it is very comfy, not bad for speed , handles OK and decent spec  bash

Omega General Help / Rougth Idle
« on: 22 August 2007, 17:26:14 »
Sorry to be a pain, but i am still not happy with the tick over of my 2002 Omega 2.2 litre Auto CD. From cold it starts first turn of the key idles at approx 1200 rpm and runs fine, but after less than 30 secs drops to 800 rpm and if i stop at a junction or stand in traffic you think its going to cut out. The revs never drop it just sounds like its lumpy, it will rev up no problems with no miss or hesitation. This is far worse at under 80 degrees on gauge when the car does reach operating temp it does idle much better, but again in my opinion not really smooth. Below is what i have done to try and cure the problem, again when driving the car it is smooth and drives excellent. Its just the tick over.

Things done to try and cure problem
No1- Cleaned Throttle body and all breather pipes out
No2- New plugs
No3-New Rocker gasket to stop oil in plug chambers
No4- New coil pack
No5- oil and filter change
No6- Compression test
No7- Had the car on the most up to date diagnostic machine and there are no faults been recorded in memory. No faults showing with the engine running in fact showing every thing OK. But even the technician said it sounded odd at idle but could give no ideas

Can the mixture be reset with the diagnostic machine and the revs set higher. It is drive by wire  does any one know or have any ideas cheers bash ( Tony

Omega General Help / Exhaust Manifolds are the 2.0 & 2.2 the same
« on: 23 August 2007, 21:35:15 »
I have just found my exhaust manifold cracked. OK i admit i did not believe members who told me to double check. My car is the later 2.2 litre engined car, is the manifold the same as the early 2.0 litre cars the engines look the same 4 cylinder Eco engines. Because there are very few 2.2 cars being broken but lots of 2,0 litre ones
Also there are two studs snapped, has any one had any luck drilling them out in situ, plus do you think the cracked exhaust manifold could be my rough idle problem cheers bash

Omega General Help / Re: intermitent missfire at idle 2.2 omega
« on: 18 August 2007, 23:17:50 »
RE- my 2.2 litre omega 2002 CD Auto -rough idle and if i set of at low revs seems to hesitate, if i put my foot down every thing is OK. I have put the new coil pack on ,not really made a lot of difference, so up to press i have cleaned out the throttle body like new now, all the breathers, new plugs Denso twin electrodes, new coil pack, rocker cover gasket, plus i have had it  on the top of the range diagnostic machine,  every thing is reading OK. It turns out the low revs at idle is OK the rev counter is out when put on the diagnostic machine it is ticking over at 730 revs and as i have said there are no faults showing up in any way. But even the technician said it sounded a bit rough on idle even though every thing reads OK. And i must admit i was there when he plugged it in , he showed me all the readings and levels spent a good 1/2 hr and it  still showed no faults. I will be honest don't really know where to go from here as i was expecting  some thing showing up. I expect it could be me expecting to much as i have always had classic cars, which i tuned myself and without being big headed always got them like sewing machines. These modern cars you can do b----- all with cheers bash
PS does anyone know where you get a workshop manual for the 2.2 litre 2002 omega from cannot find one anywhere

Many thanks every one for your input, I know it sounds a bit strange but i am sure the noice is from the EGR valve  [smiley=undecided.gif] i have had my head stuck under the bonnet every time i start it and there is a phutting noice coming from there, any one else had this. Re the coil pack i have had to put the old one back on until the new one comes. Like you all have said the rubber or plastic is falling to bits every time i touch it, so fingers crossed. I am steadly getting things sorted and hope i will end up with a decent car. I am thinking of buying two of the early mirrors though as mine is a 2002 model and a new one for the N/S is £200 a S/H one £100, missed one at £50 but i can pick up a pair of early ones for £25. I will have to see how to put a picture of the car on. I paid £1700 for it apart from the mirror the bodywork is excellent as is the interior it is the CD model and full service history, mind you what i have had to change and sort out it makes you think what they do for the money. It has had a new cam belt and exhausts from cat back. I dont think it was a bad price 100470 miles

The cam gasket was gone, have done this plus as i said cleaned out all the breathers ,the throttle body and yes unplugged the small hole, what i did find was the breather pipe to the block was distorted i had been getting an oil drip and after fitting new gasket not cured it ,so i took it off again put a straight edge across you could drive a bus through the gap so i got it on a thick plate of glass and ground it flat . No more oil leaks from there. I am buying a new coil pack as the old one is falling to peices must be the oil and heat. Still same LOW tick over 600 revs will see what new coil pack does. Oh yes i did change the plugs for new ones cheers Tony

I have just cleaned my throttle body out along with all the breather pipes to try and get the tick over to go above 600revs, The car starts straight away and still idles at 600revs but now and again i get a miss fire like a phut. recheacked every thing , took the diss pack off the plug holes are filled with oil on 3-4 cylinders, cleaned them out plus cleaned plugs but still the same . Has any one got a run down off how to change 2.2litre cam cover gasket with photo's , like there are for the V6 models please
