General Car Chat / Re: Worth repairing?
« on: 30 September 2013, 08:46:03 »
Thank you everyone for the helpful replies. I have finally found a local family mechanic whom I have some family ties to and I trust, so I'm going to ask him to have a look at the exhaust/brakes/springs on Friday. I'm just reluctant to spend big money getting a car through an MOT that is literally worth nothing more than scrap, even if it is a nice car(no-one wants these gas guzzlers any more!). I spent ~£350 replacing the track rods etc for the last MOT, which stung a bit. I've also replaced the rest of the exhaust a couple of years ago, so annoyed at having to do more exhaust work.

Obviously the tyres and brakes are wear and tear (although front pads replaced last year too), but it's just unfortunate to need to replace all of those at the same time as paying for other MOT bits AND my road tax (which is extortionate, seems to go up every year!). The car is low mileage and is tidy enough inside and out. The rough running and lack of power I put down to spark plug/coil pack issues (which also needs attention) is probably more down to a gaping hole in the exhaust though, right?

dbdb - I think the MOT testing station may certainly have been being over zealous. I phoned on Thursday to make a booking for Saturday and they booked me in for 11am. When I turned up they told me there was no record of me and that they would "try to fit it in", but acted like I had done wrong and was a big inconvenience to them. I knew there and then it was going to fail. Certainly one of the tyres was worn, but going by the wear bars, the other two had life in them yet.

Taxi Driver - The car doesn't pull when braking. Off the top of my head I think the readouts were 28% and 4%, although I could be slightly out.

nitro - The car has been in the family since it was one-year-old, I know its history and it hasn't covered many miles. Looking around at cars in my price range (up to about £1,500) I would have to downgrade, go older and more mileage. After having a look around I'm leaning much more towards repairing the Omega. Although it all depends on my quote on Friday. As ronnyd says, I could downgrade and still end up with the same problems in six months when the replacement car needs an MOT.

Just to further complicate matters - I'm emigrating in May, which further muddies the waters as to whether it's worth spending money on it or not.

General Car Chat / Worth repairing?

Hey hey,

2002 2.2 Omega with 75k on the clock, just had it in for its MOT and I'm trying to decide if it will be worth repairing or not (since these cars aren't worth a whole lot now).

Failed on:

3x new tyres (obviously wear and tear but pushing the cost of an MOT pass up!)
Front brakes are imbalanced (not sure what repairing this entails or how much it is likely to cost)
Offside rear spring is fractured and needs replaced (assuming for ride quality I would need to replace both at the same time though?)
Exhaust has a major leak of gases (the mechanic said something about the manifold if that makes any difference?)

How much would you expect to spend for these repairs? I don't know whether to repair the car or if its time for it to meet that big car crusher in the sky?

Okay, so assuming the true problem is the coil pack and I need a new one, should I also replace the plugs? And I need to fix the cam cover gasket to stop this from just happening again when it fills with oil? (And I will need new rubbers as the above poster says, they are all brittle and falling apart).

Starting to sound expensive. The car will be lucky if it's worth £500 and I'm leaving the country at the start of next year. Hmph...

New coil packs on eBay are ~£80!

What are the ramifications of running the car with a dodgy CP?

(Oh, and I'm located in Dumfries/Edinburgh).

Thanks for the advice. I can get the plugs from Halfords for £18, is this good value or should I get them elsewhere?

I think the cam cover has been gone for years; I bought the car from my Dad a year ago (he had it from one year old), and he looked at changing the plugs a few years ago and said that they were swimming in oil then too!

Other than removing the pack and replacing it firmly and screwing it back in, is there anything else I can check? It's just not running at 100%.

Well, I did say four plug wells :) But yeah, 2.2.

I haven't replaced the plugs, just cleaned the oil out of the wells and put the old ones back in. The car is only about to tick over to 75,000 miles, but it is likely the plugs that came originally in the car (52 Plate), so they probably do need to be changed.

It just seems strange that it has gotten worse after I started fiddling with them.

I was debating changing the spark plugs on my Omega since it runs a bit rough and sluggish in general. When I removed the coil pack I found that all four of the plug wells were full of oil. Deciding that this could be the cause of the rough running I mopped up the oil using kitchen roll and put back the coil back.

The car then ran fine for a while, but soon began dropping revs whilst idling, sounded like an old tractor and had no power. I removed the coil pack again and cleaned the springs in petrol. It now runs fine about 90% of the time but at low revs still sounds rough and has no power. What is going on?!

Cheers,

Alec.

Omega General Help / Re: Replacement Spare Key
« on: 21 September 2012, 21:03:23 »
Vx quoted me £125 for a spare key (quite a few years ago)

Mine cost all in around £30!

Blank on ebay looks ok - same seller sells second hand fobs - just check it the same type as yours ;)

TB charges £15 for pogramming to car (I think :) ) :y

Think thats expensive - wait 'till you lose/misplace your only one  :o

TB = The Boy? http://theboy.omegaowners.com/tech2/prices.shtml

I'm in Edinburgh so it looks like Hotel21 could be my man?

Key horseshoe blank off ebay (make sure it comes with transponder chip) - about £7-£8
Get it cut to existing (got mine done for free)
Get remote off ebay (same type as your existing)
Put lot together and get Tech2'd to your car (TB's tech2 service did mine)

 :y :y

Hi,

Thanks for your quick reply.

So I'd need to get something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-ASTRA-VECTRA-OMEGA-UNCUT-KEY-HEAD-INCLUDING-ID40-TRANSPONDER-CHIP-NEW-/320830898153?pt=UK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET&hash=item4ab302ffe9#ht_2078wt_1163

Get it cut at a locksmith. Then buy a shell including electronics, and then find someone who can Tech2 it for me? An auto locksmith?

Sounds quite expensive just for a spare key, really! :S

Omega General Help / Replacement Spare Key

Hey hey,

I recently bought my Dad's 52 Plate CD Omega from him. When he bought it in 2003 it was supplied with only one key.

I'm aware that it can be very expensive to replace the key at the dealership if it is lost, but is there an easy way for me to copy the existing key and programme it to the car? There are a lot of different keys available on eBay but I don't know if they're any use to me?

Thanks,

Alex.
