Omega General Help / Re: Omega 3.2 estate Starts but won't run
« on: 23 January 2015, 13:42:44 »
All good news! My second hand vacuum switchover valve and vacuum valve arrived this morning and I quickly fitted them and put everything back together. Turning the key with a freshly charged battery the engine burst into life. The idle held at about 700rpms and I couldn't hear any undue whistling sounds. The temp gauge got up to just shy of 90 deg before the thermostat opened and after a while the front fans kicked in. I took the car for a short spin to check everything was ok.
On return from my run I refilled the expansion tank as that had run down and double checked for leaks. I also put the heating on and felt a blast of hot air before it died down to a luke warm flow. I guess there must be an airlock in the system which I'll have to work out over time. therefore I think that's it - all sorted. Just goes to show what mischief an air leak can cause on these cars!
Many thanks for all your help. The anecdotes regarding air leaks was the break through and proved to be correct. That's all until next time!

Had a good afternoon stripping everything back down and checking for possible causes of air leaks.
First issue was a bit of plastic that had got caught on the O ring grooves on the plenum. Had deformed the new o ring slightly but nothing irrecoverable. I discovered why I cannot detach my inlet and injectors completely -  it's been hardwired into my LPG ecu. Should have realised that first time around. Next interesting discovery was the air vacuum valve at the back of the right hand bank had broken off - completely. Further investigation revealed this had been broken and then repaired with epoxy. The mix was a little heavy on hardener and it had become brittle. My fiddlings earlier had caused it to separate. I believe this was the root of unmetered air getting into the cycle and playing havoc with the other sensors. My bodge with the gaskets probably made no difference when compared to the open end of a vacuum pipe! One slight problem that I need help with - the valve is held in place by a rather curious fastener. Not sure how it works. There is a centre core which would suggest a push fit application. Certainly not enough room to weald a spanner or ratchet. Any ideas? Would download a photo but can't on this post.

HI All,
Thanks for your comments. I have been head scratching a lot over this one and replaying what I pulled off when I dismantled the plenum and intake manifold. I noticed the rather flimsy rubber gaskets on the plastic intake manifold were flat and thought I could bodge it with some sealant and an extra tweak of the spanner. I suspect this has not worked and I now have numerous air leaks around that manifold. I have ordered new gaskets which should be arriving today. Will do the pedal check once gaskets replaced. I'm comfortable with the injectors as I did not detach the injector rail completely - there was a cluster of wires that disappeared into the bulkhead that did not have a connector. I have also had trouble in the past with vacuum hoses, mainly the rubber right angles perishing. The latest one to go was on MAF ( I do get confused between MAF and MAS) its the box on the air intake pipe at the back of the rads. Therefore I'll check the rubbers at the back of the plenum for leaks. Have also noticed the switch over solenoid has been bodged a good 'un. Its been broken off as one securing lug is missing and a bit of plastic pipe from a WD40 can has been glued in place of one of the vacuum pipe couplings. Not sure if this would also contribute but is been there some time. Anyway, will report once the gaskets are changed but thanks again for your help.

further to my last post I have go the engine to run but it's very lumpy and I can hear popping in the plenum. As the revs increase it smooth's out and sounds normal. Its idle that seems to be the issue.

Hi All,

Just a quickie - car starts but doesn't run. Cuts out after a few seconds. Due to the amount of gizmos just wondering what I should check first.
The thermostat was stuck open so I decided to change that which meant taking off the plenum and inlet manifolds and uncoupling all sorts of connectors and hoses. Therefore my problem is more likely to originate from something I have fiddled with and failed to put back properly.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
regards

Omega General Help / Re: Battery going dead - overnight
« on: 04 November 2012, 13:19:26 »
Managed to get the tests done.
Results in numerical order as per the recommended test sequence.
3. 13v across terminals
4.11.4v engine off load applied (lights, front screen blower, rear demist, fog and heated seats)
5.dropped to 9-10v cranking no load
6. 13.7v at idle
7.Engine speed 2k rpm no load 14v
8. Loads added as before 12v
9.Increased rpm to 2k 13v
10. Positive terminal on battery very hot. Negative cool. Started to rain again postponed checking other earth points, etc
Looks like a duff battery and a dodgey + terminal.

Hvae the same bearing problem, Rumbling whilst driving from the OSR wheel. Decided it was the bearing though haven't confirmed. Had used the estate to transport rally engines about so had quite a bit of weight in the back. Was going to tackle it this weekend but my battery has died so focussing on that now. Let me know how it goes.

Power sounder hasn't been removed. Was going to do the battery checks but its chucking down with rain at the moment. Of interest why would the power sounder drain a battery? If its live doesn't something sound? Keen to know the rationale behind remvoing the power sounder.

It beeps when the indicator switch is on so have discounted that. This is only the 2nd time it has happened. have left the car for over a week and it started 1st time. Its clear the fault is intermittant. What would be the likley suspect? Alt reg top of my list..

Battery is two years old so should be ok. This is the second time it has been charged from dead. I will go through the process and report back.

Where is the power sounder located and how do you turn it off? Fuse?

Omega General Help / Battery going dead - overnight

Have discovered my battery is dead - 2volts. Was tip top last night when parked up. Dicky alternator?

Also alarm has been going off when I get into the car. Have to step out and lock the car for it to go off. Doesn't happen all the time though. Very odd. Clearly an electrical issue.

Has anyone suffered similar problems?
Thinking alternator might be the source for both.

The cats were changed as I had read somewhere that they can break down or get clogged (I am running LPG) and can cause a blockage which leads to the engine stalling. At the time the crankshaft sensor was not registering as a fault so I thought this a plausible reason. The fact that the lambda sensor was stored as a fault reinforced my suspicion that the cats were blocked up. Therefore, bought a complete exhaust system. The exhaust was on its way out - the normal pin holes in the pipes, etc.
I then decided to join the forum!!
O2 sensors not changed - but can read their output via my code tester. Not entirely sure what the correct values should be though.

To chrisgixer, many thanks for the info will start searching. Still have the old cats so may keep hold for the time being - just in case. The fault code I did get was an O2 sensor one but that has not reappeared. Now I know the crank sensor was to blame for me conking out all the time the old cats maybe perfectly serviceable.

Have studied the bulb replacement procedure and it appears striaghtforward. Will get that sorted on the weekend. :y

It was a sensor packaged by Kerr Nelson - but had no Bosch markings on it. So assume not genuine. Seems to be doing the job though. The original was a Bosch.
The whole exhaust was changed from the manifold back. The new exhaust had a slightly different configuration than the original one but went on with no problem. Hardest part of the job was unhooking the rear silencer - needed an extra set of hands. To note, there is a gasket from the manifold onto the downpipes. All my local motor factors couldn't supply and I'm 10mile up the road from Luton! Lucky for me I have an engineering chum who made some from pure copper and annealed them. Did the job perfectly.
To TheBoy - thanks for the kind offer but I've already cleared the codes. Would appreciate help on replacing the dash board blown blub - I agree all known faults should get fixed and if any return then i know I have a genuine problem. Keen to hear your views on chnaging the cats, The new ones did look very different than the old ones. :-\

Well, changed the crankshaft sensor with no major dramas. The new sensor runs very close to the exhasut manifold shield which is a bit disconcerting. Cable tied the wire to the brake lines running on the side of the engine compartment and that seems to be holding it clear. Lucky for me the wiring loom support that runs right across the nearside set of cylinders had been broken previously so I was able to lift the sensor connection clear and unplug it. It was attached to its securing mount. That was discarded. Heavens knows how you'd get access otherwise.
Once all fitted, fired up and the engine ran perfectly. No issues on a test drive so looks like the problem was all to do with the crankshaft sensor.

Flush with success I decided not to attempt the gearbox oil change - will save that for next weekend!
Will let you know how it all goes!
