Omega General Help / Re: correct torque setting for wheel bearing
« on: 22 November 2013, 17:50:35 »
OK, so, admitted to being in over my head with the idea of changing the bearing and took the car to the garage this morning. After describing the symptoms, his first thought was not the wheel bearing but the diff. Left the car with him so he could have a proper look and he rings me back a couple of hours later. Wheel bearing fine, diff fine. Turns out the problem is the exhaust. On the upper side of the pipe where the centre section and back box meet, there is some serious rot and a couple of fair sized holes plus one of the mounts has come away entirely (big hole where it should be).

As I understand his explanation, it was causing the exhaust to move around and rub against parts of the car its not meant to, hence the weird noises. He's fitted a new exhaust and the car is perfectly fine now, no odd noises and is whisper quiet again. It just goes to show how easy it can be to mis-diagnose something. I was 100% certain the bearing was fubared.  ???

The hub nut is 30mm.
I hop you've thought about how you're going to extract the hub from the bearing, and then remove the bearing from the hub-carrier. The circlip requires some hefty pliers too.

It's not a difficult job with some appropriate tools, but without them you will really struggle. I made my hub extractor, but bought the bearing puller set.
Good point. Luckily for me, I know somebody who has the tools to extract the hub so I don't have to worry about that. and I have several pairs of heavy duty pliers

cant remember if its 27 or 30mm. 30 i think.  :y
Thanks for that. I had a feeling it would be somewhere around that kind of size. I think I'll take the new nut that comes with the bearing with me when I go to get the socket, just to be sure.

Omega General Help / correct torque setting for wheel bearing
« on: 20 November 2013, 17:17:19 »
Hi all
Seeing as I don't have access to a copy of Mr Haynes book of lies, could anybody tell me what is the correct torque setting for the rear wheel bearing hub nut thingy. Also, what size is the nut as I will need to buy a socket to fit it.

It's a 52 plate, 2.2 auto if that matters but I'm assuming the wheel bearing is the same on all models.

As ever, all help is appreciated, thanks in advance  :)

Omega General Help / Re: Engine running cold

Thermostat failed open, system never gets hot as it is "overcooling" which will get worse as winter temperatures drop. You can't get heat out of a cold system !! The engine running cold will also make the fuel economy worse !!

Time for a thermostat change ..  :y :y :y

Its due for a coolant flush/change anyway so I can kill two birds with one stone

Start engine from cold and leave to idle, with the heater turned OFF, whilst standing with one hand on the LARGE pipe from the thermostat to the top of the radiator....

If the pipe very gradually warms up the thermostat is stuck open and requires changing.

What SHOULD happen with a serviceable thermostat is the pipe stays cold until a sudden surge of HOT (not warm) water passes along it as the thermostat reaches heat and opens.

My betting is you get the gradual warming .. change the thermostat .. :)
You were right. Gradual warming. Thanks for the help  :)

It blows warm air into the cabin but I wouldn't exactly call it hot. Even with the heater set on it's highest setting the air coming into the car isn't as hot as I'd expect it to be. Checked the coolant level and it's just where it should be.

Omega General Help / Engine running cold
« on: 08 November 2013, 10:06:18 »
Hello
I have a 52 plate, 2.2 saloon and according to the temp gauge, it runs way colder than it should. It also takes quite a while from starting up until the needle even begins to move. Basically it hovers around the first notch and occasionally will get up to the 80 mark but quickly comes back down again. The general opinion is the obvious stuck thermostat but knowing these cars as we do, it occurs to me there could be other possible causes I may need to investigate. Could somebody tell me if there is anything else I should look for or is it a fairly safe bet its just the thermostat?
Any help would be appreciated  :)

Thanks for the tip. I'll get it properly checked out and see where it goes from there

thanks for the suggestions guys. At least I have a couple of things to explore. One other question, if it's the bushes, does anybody know where I might be able to hire the proper removal tool. With my track record, if I try to do the job without it, it will only end in tears  ;D

I've finally managed to get another Omega after I had to let my beloved V6 go last year. Have a 2002 2.2 saloon and I've noticed when I drive for more than about 10 miles or so, the back end starts to make a creaking sound when I go over a bump. It sounds like it's coming from the NS rear wheel. I'm puzzled as to what it could be because it doesn't do it all the time or on short journeys. I really have no clue what is the issue so I would be grateful for any advice.  :)

This morning I had the heater on full and noticed that only the drivers side has heat. The passenger side stays cold even with the control set to "HI"  Does anyone know what might be wrong with it.
