Omega General Help / Re: a little bit of mayo?
« on: 23 June 2008, 23:14:05 »
God I will miss this resource.  I haven't made many posts but have referred to this forum countless times. Every time it has helped me! Looking around for a similar Land Rover one has not been fruitful. I will be stuck if the Range Rover has a funny turn (or not so funny).

Thank you for your help I will try driving the car to work tomorrow and see how it goes.  Like I said I have never noticed it before and I don't tend to drive it on short journeys.  Maybe I should direct my purchaser to this site to put his mind at rest.

Omega General Help / a little bit of mayo?
« on: 23 June 2008, 22:57:55 »
Hi there - I'm looking for some advice.

I am selling my beloved Omega Elite.  I have defected to an LPG Range Rover! Sorry guys just being honest.  I have replaced everything on the Omega when ever it has gone wrong. Bills into 1000's - I'm sure you all know the feeling.  It is advertised locally and on ebay.

It has been stood for around 2 weeks - not even started.  I took it for a short 10 mile drive with a prospective purchaser tonight, and when we returned he noticed saw a small amount of mayo in the filler neck and on the cap. Not surprisingly he wanted to walk away muttering blown head gasket.  I have never noticed this before.  Could this be condensation in the crank case? Or is it something more sinister?

Oil cooler and breathers renued about 8 months ago. Car does not seem to loose water. Tick over etc is fine, top hose is not solid so I don't suspect head gasket.

I would not dream of selling a car if there was something seriously wrong with it - in my book it is not fair to the purchaser. I have read some other posts that say that a small ammount of mayo is NORMAL on short journeys.  It will be hard to convince a prospective purchaser that this is the case. Can I do anything to stop this occurring if it is not serious?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

PS if anyone is interested in buying then it is listed on ebay - item number 260254906819. I'm in Newton Abbot Devon.

Omega General Help / Re: Smoke coming out from LH side

Note also, that it can take a few miles for ll the oil to burn off the manifolds following cam cover gasket change.

This happened to me. Mine were leaking so badly I was topping up with oil every day and every time I stopped it looked like the car was on fire. There was a lot of oil floating around the engine bay. In my case I was still getting small puffs of smoke a week after the gaskets were replaced and the oil mopped up and it took about 3 weeks before the burning oil smell finally went away !

I agree.  I had a nightmare with my 3.0 elite.  My breathers were blocked and caused the classic rocker cover gasket failure.  Not much oil loss but a constant smell of burning oil in the cabin and smoke bailing out of the wheel arches and round the scuttle when stopped.  As above like the engine was on fire.  I had my work done at a local garage as I didn't have the facilities at home and they fitted 3 (count them) three sets of non genuine gaskets each set lasted less than a week. You also need to make sure you use the right sort of gasket sealant. I learned the hard way - I thought the stories of genuine gaskets and black sealant was a myth, even the pattern ones look the same - from my experience they are the only ones that work.

Omega General Help / Re: Newbie - Strange Coolant loss problem

Thanks everyone for your help.

I managed to get the faulty HBV off by just removing the scuttle panels.  WHAT A JOB - but it was possible.  I ended up purchasing a genuine unit from Lathams Vauxhall in Newton Abbot for £28.  After a couple of flushes and some anti freeze it was job done.

Thank you both for your advice.

To get to the valve do I need to remove the Plenum or is it possible to do the job by just removing the scuttle panel?

Thanks for the advice Mark.  I'll whip the scuttle off tomorrow and take a look.  I guess a genuine VX unit is the best way forward.  Having read some of the other posts for HBV there would seem to be a low life expectancy for a pattern/factor part. If this is the fault, is there anything else I would need other than fresh antifreeze?

Omega General Help / Newbie - Strange Coolant loss problem
« on: 13 September 2007, 00:06:40 »
Hi All,

I have just registered having used this site as a very valuable resource in the past.  What a great community there is out there for Omegas. The car is a '99 3.0 Elite estate.  I've just had the oil cooler replaced by a local garage along with the dreaded blocked breathers - leaking rocker covers burning oil syndrome.

I have a strange coolant loss problem which only manifests its self when the heater is set above the Lo position. I get fairly rapid coolant loss from the rear drivers side of the engine.  Would this indicate a faulty HBV.  It would seem to be something related to the return pipe from the heater matrix.  When I top up the header tank with the engine cold and ignition off I also get a small leak. As soon as the engine is started the leak stops.  If I turn on the heater at all - water drip, drip, drip from bottom of bell housing.

I would appreciate any help in where to look first.
