Omega General Help / Re: Battery life
« on: 17 April 2009, 23:13:38 »
Many thanks again. They seem to be about £140 so I'll flog this one on a bit longer - until I next go on a week's holiday anyway.

That's interesting as it does sit for up to a week at a time most of the year, and definitely wouldn't start after 3 weeks. What exactly is the gel battery you have ?

Omega General Help / Battery life
« on: 17 April 2009, 20:06:01 »
The battery in my 2.5 CD is 18 months old and will go flat if I leave the car parked for more than a week. I had it checked by an auto electrician who measured a drain of about 65mA on the battery with the car parked and locked. He reckoned that is about normal. He then checked the battery condition which was also OK. This means that my fully servicable car won't start if I go on holiday for a week and leave it at the airport. Can this be right ?

Omega General Help / Water pump change with cambelts ?
« on: 27 January 2009, 11:27:07 »
I notice from other postings people seem to change the water pump when renewing the cambelts. Is this done as a precaution ?. My 2001 78000mile 2.5 V6 is due for a cambelt change and I get the impression I should get the water pump done at the same time as, as far as I know, it's still on the original.

Omega General Help / Re: camcover gasket sealant

Thanks Guys. I've done a forum search and it seems the green stuff is for metal to metal joints and metal to plastic require the black stuff. So it's off to the Vauxhall parts department again for the 5th time !

I am changing a camcover and Vauxhall have sold me green sealing compound part no. 90542114. Am I right in thinking this should be black and part no. 90585251 ?

Omega General Help / Re: Front Pad Rattle ?

If it's the pad then the rattle will stop when the brakes are applied, and reappear when they are released.

Omega General Help / front brake pads
« on: 07 June 2008, 12:47:42 »
I have bought some GM front pads from a Vauxhall dealer. One pad each side seems to have backing material stuck on it and the other doesn't. There is no indication as to whether the pad with the backing goes in the inside or outside. The old pads were Ferodo and niether have the backing so give no clues. Anyone know which way round to fit the new ones ?

So what would you expect to pay for a water pump then ?

Sounds like a good idea to me Doz, I'm intending to do something similar myself.

I think you're right. In that case surely an 1/8" hole covered with duct tape would be enough to save your gaskets if the breathers blocked.

Would anyone happen to know if each camcover contains 2 seperate sealed chambers or one ?

Open breather pipes clearly don't upset the "pressure balance" of a Caterham engine but Kevin's post would indicate this may be different with an Omega. However, if the camcovers run at a slight negative pressure, the blanking grommet would be an even easier solution. I agree with the point that clean oil and breathers is the best preventative maintenance. I change my oil regularly but the breather cleaning seems a lot of faffing about to do unless you have to.
