Omega General Help / Intercooler air leak - exhaust emissions light
« on: 19 January 2014, 11:22:33 »
Hi all

For a while now I have had this sound when turning off the car, I thought it might be something connected with the air con.

http://youtu.be/bkHvTu18Snw

On Friday I took the car for a short spin to the shops and the exhaust emissions light came on for 10 seconds, couldn't see any smoke anywhere coming from the back of the car.

I am petrified to drive the car anywhere now for fear of blowing up a second turbo as this is the light that came on when the turbo went poop, there was however no surge or nothing like what happened the last time, I was stuck in traffic at the time idling.

Is it safe to drive on this, need to get her to the boyfriends to it can be inspected.

There is also a squeaking coming from the car, it's slightly like the sound a fan belt would make but it was changed less than 10k miles ago. Would my car (2001) be timing belt or chain?

Car is running fine otherwise, piggish when cold but when she is warm she is grand, we put some Dipatane in her 400 miles ago and I dunno if it's in my head but the car certainly felt more responsive on the way home.

Could the Dipatane have something to do with it, moving soot onto a sensor? (I probably have no idea what I am talking about here  :-[)

Himself checked out the rear of the car all ok.

The front however, horrific pull to the left when you press on the breaks, needs ball joint, tie rods and bushing on the front left side, the amount of play in the wheel was shocking, how this passed the nct (irish mot) I will never know.

We are going to just price up the s full suspension arm for both sideas he works in a motor factors so nice discount to be had.

Think I may have an air leak somewhere as well, a whistle coming from the engine / turbo that needs to be looked at too. Car is driving fine though so hopefully it's an easy fix.

Do read up on the advice on here about wishbones as there are some that are made of chocolate.  I believe all German Parts Lemforders are recommended if going for pattern.  On no account use Delphi wishbones, experience on here, and personally, indicates that they are rubbish. :y

Thanks will pass it on!

Omega General Help / Re: Dash and headlights flickering at idle
« on: 13 January 2014, 11:44:12 »
Slightly related, I have noticed that when I turn on my rear screen heater there is a loud enough click coming from the dash and my dash lights and headlights dim?
Any ideas?

I had a similar experience to yours , going over a level crossing I heard a noise as you describe, stopped, asked the driver behind if he saw anything drop off, looked all around the car...nothing I could see. Shortly afterwards the car went for its MOT and they discovered a broken coil spring ....  this I think was the noise I heard. Might be worth checking yours?

Oh I see, will be getting the car checked out this weekend, can you drive on a broken coil spring?

Ah panic over, the 'bolt' that I thought was missing is the hole on the far right, thanks for that pic!

Some help please  :(

Driving down the road last night and heard a metal clang and thought I ran over something.

Got under the car to check and I could see a bold missing from the grey cylinder type thingy which is situated in front of the petrol tank.

(it's the last piece of the engine and transmission when you see an engine laid bare on the floor!!??)

I am presuming this is the outside cover of the diff as it does have two arms coming from it feeding to the two rear wheels.

There are 3 bolts along the bottom of it and I appear to be missing the right one. I have no idea how long this has been gone or if this is the noise that I heard driving down the road.

The car did recently pass it's NCT (irish mot) so I would presume if something like that was missing it would have been a fail advisory to get it looked at?

I have a 180 mile journey ahead of me later on this evening so need to know how dangerous this missing bolt is, would it be a generic bold that a mechanic could be refit for me or is it a special Vauxhall bolt?

I am unable to load pictures from work but if somebody has an email I could mail them a picture of what it looks like?

Many thanks Fi

Bleed the old fluid out of the system, and replace it with new fluid. :y

I dread to think when it was done the last time, so am I right in assuming that brake fluid looses it's effectiveness over time?

« on: 10 November 2013, 11:00:37 »
Hi all

Have noticed that my brake pedal has become very soft.

The brake fluid level is correct so don't appear to have a leak that i can see. Car is stopping but not as fast as you would want it to be in an emergency.

I got my handbrake cables replaced a while back. Could that work have disrupted something?

I read on Google about brakes needing bleeding, can air just appear in the system from time to time?

Lastly there was a nice little plum of blue smoke from the exhaust on start up from cold but it didn't happen when the engine was hot, is this what diesel cars do when cold or do i have a in the nasty oil leak somewhere maybe or should have turned the key twice in the ignition unto make sure the glow plugs had a chance to work properly?

I checked this last night. I have a pool of water under the pollen filter. I tried to get my hands in to fish around but could only get so far.

Would i be right in saying the best thing to do would be to hoover the water out and then i night be able to see what i am doing?

Last night i checked mine out, i have a nice pool of water under the pollen filter. I tried to get my hand in and fished around to see what was blocking it but couldn't feel anything and couldn't get my hand down very far either.

How do i unblock this?

A common problem which a lot of omega owners come across. After having destroyed the hedgehog om my last car I now check the scuttle almost every week , a bit over the top maybe but it only takes a couple of minutes and gives peace of mind. Especially  when the leaves are coming off the trees.

How would you know when this heater is on it's way out?

I have noticed a nice little puddle on my front passenger floor so I have checked around the bonnett area to make sure it's all clear, my car is parked under a tree  :(

There is an awful lot of condensation in the car 5 mins after you get into it so I am sure it's not fully dried out yet.

Omega General Help / Car does not like under 1000rpm
« on: 15 October 2013, 19:28:39 »
Hi all

Have noticed my car does not like driving under 1000rpm at all. Gets very lumpy and jumpy as if its about to cut out. Noticed this while crawling along in traffic the other day in second gear, any ideas?
