Omega General Help / Re: Oh Bugger - The END?
« on: 15 October 2006, 19:29:25 »
there is something very very satisfying to stripping an engine with a fault, repairing and rebuilding the engine. Especially if you have never done these things before or on a complicated engine. mere mortals against machines or something like that. Although aprehensive to begin, but with the right guidance or book and gaining confidence ready to tacle other problems as they arrive. Must make me the oldest apprentice in the world.

Well done to all and a special good luck to allenm who is a very happy bunny.

Oh dear, after all you have been through it sounds rough. Definately hear that clonk you talk about. Doesnt seem to be cyclonic though, just every now and then. Dont want to be a kill joy but that seems to be a tops of and inspection job.

confidence is the key to success, before I tackled the oil cooler problem I had never worked on an engine containing a multitude of parts and electronic gizmos. Now that is finished and feeling very confident, I intend to do the timing belt and accessory belt next before I end up with your problem.
Go for it Al.

Thats a known problem area for Carltons, Breathers and pipe work need cleaning occasionally. Has been known to blow oil out of the oil filler spout as well.

Are you using a proper brake pipe spanner? like a hexagonal ring spanner with a slot in it?......
Like these -
Although if they're really tight the spanners will still have a tendancy to flex & spread.

Yes, I even cut the offending pipe and used a special socket set on it. that had flats not star internals. After struggling this morning the flats rounded off, so I now have the problem further down the line to remove the pressure reducer to drill and and use a thread extractor.

will pop off to halfords for some of that freeze stuff and try that.

Omega General Help / replacing brake pipes
« on: 17 March 2007, 08:32:14 »
I am having trouble replacing the front to rear brake pipe, the union undid easily in the engine bay but at the rear of the car I cant undo the pipe into the pressure reducing valve. It is very badly corroded, I have tried soaking in plus gas for three days to no avail and the union nut is starting to deteriate. I am loathe to apply heat as its very near the petrol tank.  I have tried to undo the next union along the line but that to is badly corroded. I cant even get the reducing valve out to to drill and remove the faulty union. It looks like I will have to replace the complete rear brake pipe assembly including going right back to the rear discs. It seems like a lot of work and outlay on new parts just because 1 union will not undo. Is there a mechanics trick that I need to know ?
never had this many problems when I replaced the oi cooler and cambelt. Im really cheesed off.

Omega General Help / Re: Alloy wheel stuck!! Help?
« on: 03 November 2006, 17:55:48 »
I wanted to change the wheels on my Carlton but they were also corroded on. I used the system that andy used, loosened all the wheel nuts and drove down the road, wabbled the steering wheel and slammed on the brakes. All four wheels came unstuck within 500 mtrs. reversed back to garage and removed all wheels with no further problem. cleaned hubs with wire brush and coated with copperslip before re installing wheels. You dont want this problem if you have a puncture and want to change the tyre. Especially on a motorway.

checked all the vac pipes and heater pipes when I changed the oil cooler a couple of weeks ago, all ok.

No hiss has been heard.

Where it passes through bulkhead ok?

yes all ok. I am still able to divert the air flow from screen to mid level vents,

Haynes say I have to remove the aircon gas before removing the control panel for a look at the vac pipes there, is this correct?
