Headlight and main beam are both individually fused left and right, so does suggest that the problem is between the switch and the relay... :-\
hello, thanks for all the information,i have solved the problem,i called out the aa and they told me the small relay box was in the wrong socket,i told them i could not understand how the relay box moved all by it'self,i told them i had a new exhaust fitted in the summer and left the car at the garage, and of course did not use my headlights until about two weeks ago,i am thinking someone at the garage moved the relay maybe for extra work when the evenings close in,but i cannot prove it,thanks again all

Ok, rules that out...

Headlight switch to sidelights = a single 5w light in each headlight cluster.

Headlight switch fully on = as above plus outboard head lights lit.

Indicator switch forward with headlight switch fully on = main beam on. Should then have four headlights and side lights visible.

Indicator switch pulled back should flash the inner pair of lights regardless of headlight switch position...
that is correct, but the main beam does not come on and the main beam flash does not operate

i have renewed the stalk checked the fuses and renewed the small relay box, also checked the main beam bulbsmbut all i get when i turn on the main beam headlights is the dip lights which do not go off
when you switch the the lights, when i also pull out the small relay box the dip lights do not go off,is there another relay box under the bonnet somewhere,or should i check somewhere else, any suggestions would be grateful

It'll go off when you pull relay :y

You should hear it click when you flash headlights, which will help identify which of the 2 small ones at the top it is. Earlier cars have it marked on fusebox lid
can anyone tell me the location of the main beam relay as my lights are stuck on dip and i cannot get the main beam to work or the main beam flash
if that is not the problemmi have renewd the stalk and all the fuses are ok,what else do i need to check, thanks
