Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: PMR radio install

One thing to check while trying to centre the antenna (more equal ground plane the better) is to just check how far the sunroof goes back!!!!

luckily or unluckily(depends how you look at it) i dont have one of those most modern of devices in my car.
now i have come to the dilema, where to mount the remote head, i think i may remove the ashtray bit as i dont use it anyway, plus it will give me a good position away from the middle of the console, i have quickly eyed it up with the gear stick as well, seems like a good place to put it. also then it means i can hide the wires into the dashf or a nice neat install. now to find some black plastic or similar to make a plate to cover around the sides of the head and make it look better.

There were a few scary stories in recent years with Airbags and PMR`s, both centered around Mercedes and Ford vehicles primarily.

The cause of the problems appeared to be from those using glass mounted aerials, but no self respected PMR user would use anything other than a body mount aerial drilled and grounded correctly.

 ::)
exactly, dont see why anybody would want to use a glass mount, even a boot mount is better than nothing. i will probably put one on the roof in the existing hole as suggested, and then have one on eac side rear quaters, guess i could put them on the top but would rather not be drivlling holes in the roof and playing with linings.

Mainly this is for ham use, but also other things as well.

i do like the look of the combined gps/vhf and mobile phone antenna. could be handy to have it all plumbed in still.

this will be going on my omega, i was thinking more about any computer related cables that i should be avoiding, im gunna run the power cable down the left side kick well to the boot where i will put the main radio unit, the remote head mic and speaker signal cables i will run back down the side well . the antenna should not be a problem as it will be contained to the boot.

the main thing im woried about is the airbag ecu. as im not sure where thats located.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / PMR radio install

hi all, do any of you know if there is a technical buliten available that shows manufacturer recommended positions for mounting aerials and power/antenna cables for a PMR radio? im pretty sure most manufacturers have them?

yes you could use a tape adapte, this would plug into the line out port on the H/K control box, and then you plug the tape in, this is not realy a great way to do it as the sound will be compressed and filtered as it passes through the tapes audio system, other options are to use a wireless transmitter, like the one that DND sells, im sure he will pop along and post you some details.

i wired min to the cd line input via a double pole switch that allows me to change between the 2, obviously with an ipod there realy is no need for the cd unit other than to provide a signal to the head unit saying its there.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Audio in ?

Ive got the vauxhall standed head unit my mega with a 6 disk changer in the boot, now I hardly use the CD's as I have my (ghey I know) iPod for music, now the issue is that I have now fitted my LCD for the back seat which is been run yet again by the iPod, but what I want to do rather than a crapy fm tuner is use the line out kit I have for the video and maybe use the audio in from the CD changer.

I was thinking find the left right audio cables, cut and splice to the iPods loom and have a selection of audio CD's in the changer with silient tracks, would this work ?
yes this works great have done so in mine, no electrical problems etc, only realy annoying thing is that you have to have the cd display on the screen all thetime.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / tow bar electrics 12v main
« on: 31 May 2008, 14:32:15 »
on my tow bar i have 2 connectors, the main light board one and another white one. what is the full function of this? it seems to have a much thicker cable than the trailer board plug, is it a direct connection to the battery?
if so what is the likely route for this to take, im tryin to run a power cable from the battery to a pmr radio that i will put in the boot(has a control panel thats mounted elsewhere.) and it suggests to run direct from the batter to the radio.
this seems like it could be a bit of a pain,

could i just use the existing cable without problems?

wouldent be hard to rig up a games machine to it instead. when you think a scart cable can output rgb it makes sense that it can be added to this, seems that the screen switches to rgb mode by a small voltage, kinda like the remote wire on an amp. nice easy one to play with.  :P
wish i had one to play with.

Right have checked the fuse box under the steering wheel No 4 is for the CD changer, NO FUSE. The cable for the cd changer is all there from the changer and connected. The changer is phillips and the radio is phillips as well. The stero is the SC 804 CD and the changer is the DC012. Is the radio compatible with this cd changer?
hi silly question but when you say no fuse, is it just missing or are the terminals not present? have a look inside and you will see 2 silver connectors on each side, if it has these then shove a fuse in and see what happens, if not but you have the wiring loom fitted, then the fuse is likely to be in the changer itself, on most its just a bolt you have to undo, take out the unit and look where the cable plugs in, should be about 10amp or something i think. failing that just get a multimeter and check for voltage present on one of the loom pins, it should be a live feed at all times.

let us know what happens..

The transmitter I described earlier does away with the need for that - since we started using them, no problems and no customer complaints - probably fitted a good few hundred now.

thats good, ima  bit of a tight wad when it comes to parting for things i can modify or hack on my own, hence the cd input switch.

recomend anybody to use one of these units they seem pretty good, and as its not a modulator you will not have any cross mod which is what you normally get, reason is that its signal is pretty much in tune with the amplifier , this cause the radio signals to "beat" together, and hence you loose alot of quality and experiance hissing.

in summary, if you dont mind modding and fidling about use a switch cost around £3 or if you want it done properly but also have another box to stash get one of these transmitters.

personally you cant beat propper line input for audio.

the truoble ive been having with my hk is that the audio output is absolute  crap, im now looking at connecting the output via the cd changer signal line, and have it through a switch so that i can change between cd and hk, now just need a diagram or list of wire colours for the mod.
of course i will take piccys when i do it so that anybody else could do the same if they wanted.

Omega Electrical and Audio Help / Re: Tom Tom & Traffic aerial
« on: 26 November 2007, 17:18:17 »
hi dunno should not be too much work as long as you can get the head lining out easy enough, never done it myself but was thinking about it, to put my marine band aerial on this car, as the hole is there may as well use it.

im sure you could probably get an aftermarket "beesting" type aerial, and that should just about do the job.  :y

of course you could always get some wire and make one that runs inside the head lining of the car, is as easy as getting some coax cable RG58 or RG8 would work, but are pretty thick, only problem is that this is 50Ohm cable, and most radio equipment need 75Ohm, as your going to be making a dipole this should'nt realy matter.

have a look around the net at ham radio sites for dipole construction.

i may even make a howto for you :P

cheers

hi tom tom taffic updates come in on fm frequencies iirc using tmc most common one is on classic fm. so a frequency of 100.9 round here. the traffic master updates come in via a pager signal, on 137 ish
technically you could use the tm aerial, as the length of the aerial will only be slightly shorter than is needed, but as its set up as a dipole you would have quite a big loss in reception.

to cut a long story short. yes you can however dont expect it to work as good as with the tomtom one  :P

hi thanks for the above advice, im no stranger to radio coms installs, and have been doing so for a few years, just have never come across an install on omega's before, i was mainly worried about the elctronic systems onboard, ie airbags and light checking etc,
will take your advice onboard, and hopefully it will all go smoothly  ::)
