Omega General Help / Re: Glow plug light intermittently working

I fitted a Hot Start Kit (with a friend who is an electrical engineer) it was quite straight forward, the kit came with detailed instructions, it certainly seemed to have solved my problems, not sure about the long term effects, but it will do until I refurb the Bosch pump or sell the car, whichever comes first...

Cheers Martin :)

Thanks for that, not too sure if i am going to tackle it, in case I mess something up.

I was thinking about fitting a none return valve after the diesel filter, has anyone done this this? I read it on a Landy forum, i think...

Also worth checking your GP Relay on the TD's while your messing about, it works independently from the GP dash light, stays on for another few seconds after the Dash light goes out. The Relay contacts can arc up giving intermittent voltage to the GP's.

GP Relay is in the engine bay fuse / relay box, BMW part with six wires hanging off the top feeding the GP's, gently prize the black cover of the relay, and check the two contacts inside.  ;)

I was trying to find out which was the correct relay, thanks for your informative post, Is this the correct relay?
If so do you mean the two screws, if so I unscrewed & removed the plate cleaned it with emery paper & put it back.

I think i may have solved my problem, the car starts great when cold, it is only when the engine is hot, it struggles to start, I never experienced this before. The previous ECU was chipped, even when the engine was hot the glow plug light would come on & heat the plugs & deliver fuel.
I have ordered a hot start kit via Ebay. I am hopeful this may solve my problems, I am posting this, as it may be helpful to op.

PS: If you are wondering why I am not reinstalling my Chip from my previous ECU, if got fried.... long story...  :'(

2.5td oil burner

I very recently had an ECU & transponder change over...Since the change over I am facing problems, sometimes the car starts & drives perfect, other times the glow plug light does not light up or work, the car will start if it is turned over for long spells & really give the accelerator pedal some, 4 or 5 full pushes in/out, then she fires up with lots of smoke, & usually runs rough & sometimes stalls. Another time the glow plug light comes on & goes out & she starts & drives perfect. My mechanic is suggesting the Bosch pump, but to me it sounds like an electrical problem?

I am at a loss as what to do.

Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated  :)

Thanks for the replies, the car is in Skopje...MK

I really hope the alternator is not fried also....
The current mechanic has had it on a full scan, and the ECU & other faults are showing, the car has been chipped, it used to be quite rapid for an old oil burner, I think the previous owner circumvented the transponder & now I think that is the issue, the mechanic changed the Chip for a standard one & still no joy......

I pulled the trigger today on a compatible ECU/transponder & key in Germany on Ebay, it cost me 200euro plus shipping, it killed me paying so much, I just could not find a compatible kit cheaper....I really hope that this will solve the issue, if not I will call it  a day & lay it to rest before I spend any more, and put it down to experience.

I will update when it arrives.

Thanks for all the replies & suggestions
Cheers Martin

Hi Fellow Omega lovers,

I am having some major trouble with my oil burner, it started about 8weeks ago & 4 garages  & a pocketful of money later, my car is still off the road, I have been informed I need an ECU & key ECU transponder, & I cannot seem to source them both together, I wonder if anyone can help me...

I sent my car to get a starter motor repair, my usual mechanic was to busy so I sent it elsewhere, where they changed my starter motor but knackered my car & charged me for the privilege.

3 garages later, it seems a likely explanation my car was jump started with the polarity the wrong way round & the ECU is blown, also it seems sometime by the previous owner the transponder system has been bypassed somehow, now my car wont start, it starts but the revs are high & then cuts out. I have £2K in the car & I am running out of ideas & I really cant afford to write the car off, I live & work in Skopje, but I am English & I have a UK address. Could some one point me in a direction that I possible could get my car running again. The ECU number is 0 281 001 427 1997 2.5 td manual.

Any help or advice appreciated I am really getting depressed by the whole experience.
Thanks in advance
Cheers Martin  :)

Hi there,

I have had a very strange problem, the starter motor was just changed, immediately since then on start up it is revving at 4000 rpm & really do not know what to do. I noticed the crack sensor out plastic sleeve it broken, but I am doubting its that??
My fear it is some electrical gremlin or worse the Bosch pump...

Any advise really appreciated.

Cheers Martin
