Omega General Help / Engine misfiring
« on: 01 October 2011, 14:21:25 »
I have been experiencing intermittent misfiring. Up till recently it only occurred under hard acceleration or over 3000 rpm. However, last night, after an hour or so's journey it started misfiring continually and the Engine Management light came on solid. There was a smell of burning rubber which didn't seem to emanate from the engine bay, more like from under the car - (exhaust or cat. perhaps?) After a few hours cooling down the car performed OK without any misfiring.

I've just done the paper clip test and got fault code 19 which decodes as "Incorrect RPM signal". However, after starting the engine and revving it to 5000 rpm - i.e. till it started misfiring - the fault code changed to 37 which isn't listed!

Someone suggested the Mass Airflow sensor. All comments welcome.

I can't get the photo to appear despite doing exactly what it tells me to when I right click the icon!

Don't know what happened to the photo. I'll try again.

I have just purchased rear pads, discs and a fitting kit for my 1998 2.5 V6 Tourer. The pins came from Motaquip, part no. VMK 726 and they are also much shorter than the ones on the car. Here's a photo:-

I decided to use the new ones and found I could just get them to fit with the spring bit halfway in, but they certainly should be longer and I'll be informing the trader who supplied them.

Tough one to guess... I wonder if there had been any work done recently before the fire?

If I had to speculate I'd be looking as a slight leak from one of the fuel lines onto the manifold :-/[/quote]

Yes, I think it must have been fuel-related. I had in fact removed and completely rebuilt the engine not long before. I'd checked carefully and hadn't spotted any fuel leaks though.

If you want to keep the S/L I`m selling a pair, fitted Sept. `09 so plenty of miles left in them

Thanks for the offer but I've got new ones on order and, as twiglet says, mine's an estate. Actually I've just updated my profile as my current Omega is a 1998 model. The 1997 one caught fire a couple of years ago!

Sorry to hear that!  Out of curiosity, was it the power sounder near the driver's side wiper spindle?

I never did discover exactly what the cause was. It seemed to have started near the fuel pipes where they join the manifiold. I'm going to try attaching a couple of photos (using photobucket) so you may be able to spot something I missed. Fingers crossed as I don't do this very often and will probably get it wrong!

Sorry for info about fuse..its #27..for S/L system.

Thanks for the info. I haven't replaced the shocks yet but have removed the fuse. However, when I start the engine there's a continuous clicking sound, like a relay's being cycled on and off really fast. If I put the fuse back the noise stops but it's going to be a pain doing that every time I start the engine. I'll therefore try disconnecting the compressor's power lead if I can find it - unless anyone has another suggestion.

Omega General Help / Rear Shock Absorbers

One of my rear shockers has virtually seized up. You can hardly push that corner of the car down at all and the ride is very harsh. The other shocker is leaking so a new pair is on the cards. The faulty ones are the self-levelling type but I'll be replacing them with standard ones as self-levelling ones don't appear to be available and, even if they are, I'm told they're around £150 as opposed to £60 or so each.

Question - what do I need to do to stop the self-levelling air compressor working?

Second question - do I need to purchase any washers or other items to fit the new shockers?

PS. I'm now being asked whether I wish to disable parsing of ubbc tags and smileys. I know what smileys are but ubbc tags.........................??? Is it painful to parse them?

Omega General Help / Central Locking
« on: 05 August 2011, 11:59:05 »
My Central Locking has ceased working. When I operate the Remote Control the indicators flash but the doors don't lock. If I use the key I can lock the driver's door but the others don't lock automatically. There doesn't appear to be a fuse to check. Any suggestions as to what could have gone wrong?

Omega General Help / Re: Serious overheating
« on: 16 June 2011, 10:12:15 »
Thanks for the suggestions to date. I noticed the water pump appeared to be leaking slightly so changed that but the problem still persists.

To answer your questions - yes I do get heat from the heater, no there doesn't appear to be excessive water vapour from the exhaust and, yes I am losing a lot of coolant. It appeared to be exiting from the cap on the expansion tank but, on closer inspection, I now find it's coming out of a crack at the base of the filler neck. I tried some Araldite as a temporary fix but that didn't work so I'll get a new tank.

I'm also going to change the coolant temperature sensor as the radiator fan doesn't start, even with the temp. up around 100 deg. F. I've tested the fan and it works OK with power applied directly to it.

The only other relevant part I haven't yet looked at is the auxiliary electric water pump. What is its purpose and could it cause my symptoms?

Omega General Help / Serious overheating
« on: 10 June 2011, 10:18:42 »
My Omega starts boiling after about 3 miles. The temperature gauge rises to maximum and the warning light comes on. The hoses all feel hot, as does the top of the radiator. I'm assuming it's a circulation problem. Is it likely to be the mechanical water pump? I believe these should be changed with the timing belts but this wasn't done at the last belt change. Is there an issue with the pumps? Could it be anything else? I'll be repairing it myself soon but am interested in possible causes so i know what to look for. The only thing I've noticed recently is that the electric fans are often running when the engine's turned off after a journey. The temp. gauge hasn't shown any problem until now, however.

I've just found that my expansion tank is leaking at the base of the filler neck.

What's HBV stand for?

Omega General Help / Re: Faulty EGR valve?

As others said it could be somthing more serious.
That's what I'm afraid of. However, it's only started doing it in the past day or two. It wasn't a gradual thing. It suddenly happened, right after I'd been filling the auto box. At first the smoke was so bad I couldn't see anything out of the rear window. Now it's reduced quite a bit. That makes me think it's unlikely to be worn piston rings. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about blanking off the EGR. I may try that.

Incidentally, my auto box filler plug was impossible to remove in situ. I had to drop the sump and drill it out. Has anyone had the same problem?

Omega General Help / Faulty EGR valve?
« on: 24 July 2010, 21:08:08 »
I have a lot of bluish smoke coming out of my exhaust pipe, especially when doing over 50 mph. Could this be the EGR? (what exactly does it do anyway?) I ask because I recently found the ring of plastic round the top had broken off. Nothing else appears to be wrong though I can see a few wisps of smoke coming from lower down the EGR. There have been a few other things going on which may or may not be relevant. I've been filling the auto transmission and appear to have overfilled it. I found the vent hose wrongly connected to the engine breather box so initially assumed that was the cause of the smoke. However, even with the transmission fluid at the correct level I still get the smoke. Any suggestions?(My car is a 1997 2.5 V6 Tourer which has done 161,000 miles)
