Omega General Help / Re: MV6 with Koni rear shocks - standard issue?
« on: 07 September 2010, 15:25:30 »
That's a bit odd then! The car has done less than 60K miles, so unlucky to have worn out, I wonder why they were replaced? The handling seems fine with the differing dampers front and rear, the springs look the same all round though. I guess I'll never know!

Omega General Help / MV6 with Koni rear shocks - standard issue?
« on: 06 September 2010, 22:13:14 »
My 2000 facelift MV6 has rear yellow Koni dampers. Has someone replaced these at some stage or will it have left the factory with them? The fronts are no-name and I'm presuming they are just standard VX parts. I can't remember seeing yellow Konis on other MV6's.  :)

Update. Alldi, that was brilliant advice which hadn't even occured to me!  ::) I simply used a pair of pliers to remove the remains of the bolts, which came out really easily, happy days.

I've ordered new bolts from Vauxhall, they didn't charge much. The car is going into the garage very soon for bodywork, so I'm just going to get them to fit the front brakes, I've given up trying to get those big bolts off, and I've given up trying to get that blasted wear sensor off the pad! I'd rather pay the garage to do it this time round, at least I did the rears okay. I've read good things about these ebc pads so it'll be nice bedding it all in.

Cheers for the all the advice chaps  :y

Cheers guys. I know an engineer, so I may ask him to drill out the bolt and retap the threads, it's beyond my capability. I may have to invest in a decent extendable socket wrench too, at the moment I rely on a standard spanner set, so I just can't get the necessary force onto the 18mil bolts I suppose.
The pads are EBC Ultimax, so they didn't come with new 13mil bolts. Where would be the cheapest place to get new bolts do you reckon?
I'll be on the forum a lot more soon, once I've joined up properly, this really is an excellent and helpful place.  8-)

Omega General Help / Front caliper bolts sheered....ARRRRGHH!!!!
« on: 08 August 2010, 17:05:54 »
Thought I'd save a few bob and do the discs and pads myself after getting insurance money following my recent accident (lorry went into the back of me).
The rear brakes went fine, took a little while to get the old rusted discs off but that's all, enjoyed doing it.

Started trying to do fronts today. First, BOTH 13mm bolts securing the caliper to the mounting bracket sheered, so there's now no way of attaching it back. The two 18mm bolts that hold the bracket tothe hub are seized SOLID. I've used a can of WD40 on them and battered the spanner with the mallet, to no avail.
What can I do? The car is now on stands in the garage and is undriveable because of the sheered bolts, I can't reattached the caliper to drive it anywhere!!!!!!  :-/

Are the securing bolts and screws available from Vauxhall? How am I going to shift the 18mm bolts? Any help/advice or tales of similar problems would be MUCH appreciated folks!

Omega General Help / Re: Where's my VIN?!!!
« on: 13 November 2007, 21:18:30 »
Thought I was going insane..............just got the torch out and shivered out at the garage, the VIN is clear as day on the nearside dashboard top, and stamped into the metal plate by the washer bottle, just where you'd expect it to be. I'll point these out to mr stupid on thursday. As always, thank you chaps!  :y

Omega General Help / Where's my VIN?!!!
« on: 13 November 2007, 20:59:48 »
Guys,

Picked up the car today after all it's recent work (see my 'hello' thread!) to be told that the guy can't MOT it because he can't find a VIN number!  :o

It's too cold and dark for me to look now, but I'm gonna have a rummage around tomorrow. Any pointers as to where it might be? Not in the usual places, ie, windscreen, door sill, front crash panel etc. I must have seen it a thousand times but can't remember. This same garage MOT'd it last year for goodness sake!  ::)

It's an Oct '97 Omega 3.0V6 Elite Estate, as far as I know it's a UK model.

Cheers in advance!

Eamonn.

Newbie Welcome Area / Expensive MOT time!!!!
« on: 06 November 2007, 00:08:30 »
Hi Chaps,

Thought I'd combine a general 'Hello!' with a tale of my upcoming MOT! It's not a tale of woe, because I love my Omega....

I thought I'd get my '97 R Omega 3.0V6 Elite Estate (99,000miles) ready for it's MOT next week. Little did I know what awaited me!!! ;)

1) Four new Falken tyres (from Event mobile tyres, very good service...) £294. I could have gone budget, but as far as I'm concerned you cant skimp on tyres. I'd always gone for £30 part-worn before........BUT.......
2) Both wishbones are mullered, £117 from Motorfactors. Didn't know until I went to Supertyres in Malden (great guys...) and couldn't believe what they showed me on the ramp........wheels wobbling all over the place! And here's me thinking it was the part-worns and dodgy alignment that were making the 'mega drift all over the road! Even with the knackered wishbones the handling is great with the Falkens.................just shows you how good even cheap new tyres can be....
3) £208 - New central sections and backbox from motorfactors....
4) £45 for the new MOT
5) About £250 to fit 2 and 3 above.....
6) £65 for wheel alignment and balancing after MOT, IF it passes!!!

I could have PX'd the car (was looking at Lexus Ls400's), but I love the Omega so much I reckon it's worth splashing out on, for a few more years reliable motoring, I plan on driving through Europe next summer, and hopefully the Omega will do the job. Once these jobs are done I hope the car will be tip-top.

The car is all standard but is SUCH good fun. Some of you may recognise my name from Pistonheads, where I post on the Elise forum ( I have a S1 Sport 160 in the garage....), but as I've said on there...............

.........I took my Omega to North Weald airfield on an Andrew Walsh carlimits day (I have a picture on my Pistonheads profile of the car lining up with Elises and Imprezas!), and I EASILY beat many of the Elises around the large circuit (no I'm not joking!!!!  :y) Awesome car, love the thing !!!!!

Will keep you all updated!

Eamonn.

General Discussion Area / My new MV6 - driven into by lorry.
« on: 02 July 2010, 18:24:01 »
I finally got a chance to put some mileage on my new MV6 today. I paid above the book price for it locally, after looking at loads of dogs.

'X' reg, but immaculate, lovely colour and spec (leather Recaro etc), NO rust, just had cambelt changed, rocker cover gaskets, breathers cleaned, two new front tyres, and 58K on the clock. Just given it an oil change and I did a coolant flush with new red coolant (thanks to the how-to guide on here)  :y

Queing at the Dartford toll booths today and an artic drives into me whilst stationary! Only about 15mph, but rear offside quarter panel dented, prodrive spoiler ruined, and deep dents in the boot and bumper gouged. Amazingly the lights are unmarked and working. Driver said he hadn't seen me from so high up when he changed lanes. At least both he and the truck were English.

Bodyshop reckons 4 figures to fix, but of course the book value that insurance companies work from put these cars at peanuts really, so likely to be looking at being written off!

Should I buy it back from the insurer and repair it bit by bit? I really can't see myself finding another one as tidy as this. Totally, totally GUTTED.  :'(
